Love those old military hats. The second one - Napoleon style is interesting -for those of you who have read the Patrick B'Brian series there is a discussion of Jack Aubry and how he wore his hat - stright across the line of his shoulders as opposed to the moldern style of in line with the nose - think or Wellington. Now if the Fedora Lounge has not reached a peak of hat esoterica I don't know how it possibly could get better.

Well, I beleve they went out of syle after the invention of the stove pirpe hat or top hat by James Locke in England, but they lingered for a while until about the 1830's is my guess. Nero Wolfe has one in the series which he wears instead of his homborg.

Napoleon

this is just an elaboration of the wonderful Jack Aubrey entry above.

the fashion of the day was to wear one's hat "en colonne" (i.e. front to back)in the style of Wellington, let's say. check the battle paintings of the day.

Like the fictional Aubrey, Napoleon chose to wear his battle hat "en bataille" ...i.e. horizontally with the line of the points of the hat along the shoulders. the logic of this is two-fold. first, while looking at maps or through a telescope during battle, Napoleon needed unobstructed vision; second, of more interest in our time is that this position of his hat was one of defiance to the customs of the day . . . very similar in intention to kids wearing their baseball hats backwards.

Don't think so. Most men aren't into hats anymore, and we've already got the baseball cap :p

I'm so glad we have fellow fashion history buffs in here. The 1790's is one of my favorite decades, simply because it's that great akward in-between time. Think of in women's dress the dramatic change between paniers and stomachers and HUGE wigs, to the bustles of the 1780's, to the higher waisted 1790's, to the even higher waisted and slim "grecian revival" of the regency. Such an interesting time period, and it's unlikely we'll ever see that dramatic of a change again. In my opinion, it is the most eventful change in fashion- besides the brief "natural form" period of the late 1870's.

They are now worn over the left eye!

But the true dandy will wear one over each eye.

An honour matter.

I think they went out of style becouse, once upon a time, there was more honour than today.
The soldiers too, during the war were elegant and honourous.
Today (I'm against every kind of war) everyone could kills kids into their school, men and women on job.
Today, someone, kill another man in name of law...and everybody has his own law...unfortunately!
....but this is another story.

Riccardo.
