Oh! *goes to read the WebMD article!*
I was responding to the Natural News article. I like that WebMD one. That's my understanding as well - our screening methods for breast cancer are pretty poor, and mammograms have only been proven to reduce mortality in specific groups. I think they've also...
Re: mammograms cause cancer:
Research like this can be very difficult to compare. Mammograms lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment and lower breast cancer mortality... even if the radiation involved is raising the risk of cancer, overall it may still balance out in favor of using mammograms...
I've have both mammograms and breast MRI - the mammogram was much more comfortable!
After all the hype, I was surprised how easily the mammogram went for me. It was over with very quickly. I am lucky though - I'm able to relax (physically) and I have good mobility. It can be harder than what I...
I love my R&K Original dresses! They are simple, but flattering. Betty Rose makes nice jackets (so does Lilli Ann of course). I have one velvet Jonathan Logan dress that I loved wearing over the holidays.
One of my favorite labels is 'A Champagne original of New York' (I think that's the...
Sunny - that suit is beautiful. It looks so smart on you! The darts paid off :)
kamikat - your blouse is adorable! What a great match of fabric and buttons!

A major consideration for me (at least for the staples) is whether I can wash it - I don't mind hand washing and hanging or laying flat to dry. Drycleaning costs get crazy if I'm doing it on everyday things.
I am sort of brave with handwashing - most knitwear, some silk, velveteen and cottons...
catsmeow - I know how you feel about altering... I struggle with it sometimes too. I guess with each vintage garment I own I have to either mentally decide "It's Mine" now or not. And if It's Mine, then I go ahead and make it mine - alter it, mend it, wash it, wear it. There are some things that...
:eusa_clap Some wonderful sewing going on!
I wanted to share a mother-daughter set of aprons I made for my sister and little niece (who is still a toddler).
There's an inspiring collection of scans from "Ten All American Novel Aprons" produced by White Sewing Machine Company in 1940...
I might look for costumers too. Maybe seamstresses who specialize in wedding parties who might need to dye bridesmaids dresses, etc? High-end vintage clothing sellers?
There is a group of mostly hobby costumers that might have people in your neck of the woods: The International Costumer's...
Really, I do :). I have a hobby making costumes, so it comes up every once in awhile. I love silk and silk velvet the best (and mostly I've used Fibre reactives but in a vinegar bath). The couple times I've done cotton it's been a bit splotchier and not as rewarding. I always do it by hand in a...
I mostly use synthrapol while dyeing things myself, since it is so good at preparing fabric for dyeing, and so I've got it around. While you're right it won't fix dye at all, it does seem to help get rid of excess dye.
I think Synthrapol might help when you're washing fabrics together that...
LadyDay - I also agree, wash first then alter. You want any changes that will occur with washing (like shrinkage, or colour change etc) to happen before you cut or sew.
Color Bleeding:
I think the two apparently conflicting pieces of advice on whether to use vinegar (which lowers the pH)...
Mojito - Gorgeous!... the early 30's is definitely my era, just in case you ever get tired of this beaut ;)
pennycarrol - your pictures are not showing up :(

I'm just starting to venture out of the Powder Room... this is a great thread! I just came back from DragonCon in Atlanta where my friends and I spent some quality time dressed in Steampunk attire. Many of my vintage acquisitions worked their way into the costume.
If you're keen, I posted an...
Thanks for the advice, Feraud!
Dinerman: Thank you! The orange/rust one was my first vintage tie and I love it very much.
imoldfashioned: Yes - 'G' is my last initial. That was definitely something that drew me to the handkerchief :)

Feraud: I'm a complete novice at vintage ties, but 50" seems "short enough to be old" to me. I'm looking forward to what the experts say about it.
I've only just picked up my first 3 ties - I just discovered how much fun it is to go through those racks of colourful material! Even if I don't...
I love the men's casual shirts too - especially Hawaiian ones.
My very favorite cardigan for knocking around the house is a men's cardigan - I swooned over the label: "Keen Man", and it has a little thunderbird applique on the pocket.
And probably one of my very favorite vintage items that...
Thanks folks!
imoldfashioned - Yes, I am going to wear it at DragonCon - good guess! :)
Mr. Sable - We're neighbours! I'm also from Calgary. And I think it's probably you that recently commented on my friend drhaggis's flickr stream... the blunderbassoon drhaggis is modelling is actually...
