For Fun:

I just finished up a costume for a science fiction convention I'm going to next week. It incorporates a bunch of vintage gear and fits 'Lady Adventurers, Women of Mystery' - though it's in the 'Steampunk' sort of theme and certainly not period-correct! This costume is supposed to be a kind of vampire/werewolf hunter, so there a crucifix, silver bullets, holy water vials, etc.

Oh. My. Stars. And. Garters.

I want this outfit! You look fabulous! Are you going to DragonCon? If so please post all the dish, I'd love to hear about it.

Mr. Sable - We're neighbours! I'm also from Calgary. And I think it's probably you that recently commented on my friend drhaggis's flickr stream... the blunderbassoon drhaggis is modelling is actually the prop he made for my costume. Small world!

Wow! I guess I'm not that good at connecting the dots - I thought maybe two people came up with Blunderbasoons via parallel evolution. Where'd you get the breeches?

Lady Adventurer, v. 1

The inspiration for my Lady Adventurer outfit was a pair of boots I impulse-won on ebay a month ago, and the excuse was Indy IV.

* White handkerchief linen blouse made from a 1942 pattern.
* Khaki "linen" skirt adapted from a 1940 pattern. Side button placket, side seam pocket, and belt loops are all my own innovations.
* Belt swiped from my father (it goes one and a half times around me!)
* Boots
* Socks (which I forgot to photograph)

This is only the first version, and a dressed-up version at that. A true Lady Adventurer wouldn't bother with rolled and curled hair or complete makeup, of course!

Sunny - that looks fantastic! I think camel/tan and white is such a classic, flattering combination of colours. I love everything about this outfit! And I'm sure a Lady Adventurer would at least start out with a nice hairstyle - then let the elements have their way afterwards

I look awful in trousers, but maybe jodphurs will help cover the multitude of sins. I have never found any that fit though, as I have large calves, and they are always for skinny legged horse riders... I do have a pattern for the pants an hunt coat, and I have both women's and men's! In mine and my husband's sizes. So someday, I hope to make us some matching hunt outfits (not that we ride, we just like to dress up).

I don't have a lot of real adventure gear as I do not really adventure ( ) but one does picnic on the Nile now and then -

I saw the listing when I was browsing/searching Ebay for modern brown loafers that had a vintage shape. I fell in love with them! And at the time I had absolutely zero use for them. They're Nine West; probably 10-20 years old. Rubber tread, so not period. But they're all leather, no zippers or elastic (You have to actually lace them up! Zounds!), and the shape is so classic and non-trendy. I'm very picky about that, and these satisfied me! They still are fashion boots, not working boots; the leather's a little soft for that, and the ankle strap, while functional, is very lightweight. But they work, by golly, and I love them! Thank you!

The Nile in this case was just a Costumer's Guild picnic at the (extremely Egyptian) Rosicrucian Museum... but it was as hot as Egypt!

Luckily, no fight necessary! I am only an 8ish! So we should not have to worry! Oh, I hope one of us finds a pair - I am afraid I will have to pay for a custom pair though.

I have to say this is a great thread! I have a question though. I am a motorcyclist, I have a sportster that I love to ride, do any of you ahve any pictures of women riders adn what they wore? I have found many pictures of women riding in sidecars and such, but never one driving herself around.

Probably not unlike regular horseback-riding gear. Jodhpurs or breeches of some kind, a tailored masculine-style jacket over shirt and tie/cravat, boots or leggings/puttees and shoes. On Shorpy there's a picture of a lady taxi driver from the late teens and that's substantially what she's wearing.
