I'm almost certain I have the second one!! LOL - if only we had known a couple weeks ago :D
But I'll check and if I have it in the right size, I'm more than happy to do another swap with you for it!
I've become a huge convert to slips - especially full ones, though half-slips have their place - so much so that so I'm coming out of lurkdom to answer :)
- it prolongs the life of your garments by protecting them from you. It's often easier to wash a slip over and over instead of a dress...
Excellent - thanks so much, especially for the link to Paul's site, it's very helpful!
I was still curious what the elastic, stretchy bits in the early 20th century were made from. The elastic you'd use today for suspenders in a garter belt, for example, would tend to be blends of polyester...
Hi ladies, I'm popping out of radio silence to ask a couple questions about elastic garters - not suspenders or a garter belt, but the sort worn around the thigh or upper calf.
I associate rolled elastic garters (the kind that look like hair elastics) with the 1920s and they were around as...
On your body - the distance from shoulder to waist is typically measured on the back, from the prominent little vertebrae at the base of your neck to the waistline (and the waistline is determined as kamikat described - it's the smallest circumference). That's a tough measurement to do on...
When I first looked at the original post I thought the mannequin was just too short (including too short waisted) for the waist-seam to hit at the natural waist and that also ended up with too much of it on the floor. So, on a taller frame, if it joined at the horizontal seam you can see there...
You're right, Rachel, sometimes for fitting you've got to plan a bit more if you do zippers first, and sometimes linings, facings or other issues get in the way of doing the closure first.
Though sometimes I squeak by, if I'm being lazy, with fitting after the zipper by adjusting darts or...
I completely agree - sew the zipper (or other closure) first, if you can. Not only is it easier to put them in nicely while your pattern pieces are flat, it helps psychologically if (like me) closures are the part you dislike the most :)
I may not post much, but you ladies keep me inspired...
The best thing I use for pattern tracing is clear plastic sheeting - I buy it at hardware stores. Sometimes it's with windows, or with garden supplies. I usually just ask the service desk for it. Super cheap and you can get big rolls that last forever. It's also more durable than tissue or paper...
I love this thread so much I've come out of lurkerdom! :)
texasgirl - What a neat, useful and pretty sewing room!
Sunny - I'm envious of being able to put everything away when you're not using it.
kamikat - I love your thread wall! As you'll see in my pictures, boxes are pretty much the...
Sunny - that looks fantastic! I think camel/tan and white is such a classic, flattering combination of colours. I love everything about this outfit! And I'm sure a Lady Adventurer would at least start out with a nice hairstyle - then let the elements have their way afterwards :)
I mostly lurk here (even though I love this site) because I use up all my active online time on LJ (well, and ebay ;) )!
I also follow the vintagehair comm, and there's some really useful posts in there, but I've been thinking of unsubscribing because the volume of entries is a bit...
I just finished that Simplicity repro pattern - I made the pants. They turned out really well - the only thing I'd change about them is I would add pockets, and maybe a button closure instead of the zipper. But they fit really well!

Last_Chael: Yes! I am on her LJ flist. Feel free to stop by and friend me if you like! My username is laughingmagpie there. I'll look you up too :)
AND on topic: I've been struggling with finding a pair of pants as well. I love those you made, LolitaHaze - I looked back a couple pages and...
Smuterella - you've done the deed, so too late for my advice this time :), but I sometimes wash scratchy wool sweaters (cold water, gently, as above) and then fill the basin again and put hair conditioner into the water. Swish the sweater through with the conditioner, and then rinse again. I...
I was just wondering about hand washing some rayon items myself, particularly two rayon satin items I just bought - a negligee and a blouse.
If they were silk I would've handwashed them, but I brought them to my local cleaner, who I generally trust, and she said you had to dryclean the rayons...
I just finished watching several Silent films from the late 1910 to mid 1920s, and black stockings seemed very common as daywear (they weren't sheer though), even being worn with a nurse's uniform. So I agree, if you go further back you'll find black was a common daytime colour.

Wow - talk about a hard set of requirements to follow, and then they throw in that they'd prefer you not wear a Hawaiian print! :)
I wish I could point you to a particular dress or seller - but the image that pops into my mind is a long but floaty '30s summer dress. Also sometimes described as...
