Making a Western hat by hand?

Well now I want to put an old hat body in my smoker. More so to see the look on my girlfriend's face when I open it up. Or the look on the neighbor's face when I put it in.

Making a Western hat by hand?

That was about 10 years ago. Yahoody, have you ever tried baking a body in an oven? Just curious. Also curious what would happen if a hat body went through a torrification process like they use for roasting woods for guitar making. You "bake" in a vacuum or an oxygen free oven which prevents...

Making a Western hat by hand?

I often wonder what they used as movie prop hats but I've seen that quite a few were decent Stetsons of that time period. One of my favorite TV hats and characters is Festus Haggen. You might not immediately think of quality when seeing his hat but you can tell it actually is a good quality hat...

Making a Western hat by hand?

I myself dont care for an overly stiff hat. I dont want it floppy either. The hats I lust after move and bend but snap right back into place. The felt behaves sorta like if it were made out of silicone. The hats from old western movies appear to do just that. Some of my older Stetson and...

Making a Western hat by hand?

The customs I had both shrank and tapered easily from rain. The felt was fluffy feeling and not dense like you would expect. The sweatband on one of them was unwearable from the start. Maybe it was too absorbent, it stuck like glue to my forehead, I'd have to peel it off and it would leave a...

Making a Western hat by hand?

I like this thread. I dream about figuring out how to make the most durable hat possible. Yahoody has shown that you can improve the felt of a Winchester body. That's awesome. How "good" can you make it? What were the tricks they used way back when? What corners are cut these days that leave...

    Akubra Overload

Well now, the crowns are all shaped nearly identical so there isnt a whole lot of diversity there. I've tried other bashes but I always go back to my standard pinched telescope type bash.

    Akubra Overload

Yep, the two in the center. I tried sort of a double telescope crown with the one on the left. The creases softened with wear so it isnt as pronounced now.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

A gig on a Thursday evening? We played a private party tonight. My Akubra Campdraft Heritage version came in the mail as I was loading up. I fired up the tea kettle and gave it a quick bash before heading to the gig. I'm home now sitting on the couch and it's still on my head. I LOVE this hat!

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Went for a long after dinner walk/hike. Took the slightly aerodynamic Stagecoach since it was a little windy. My mad selfie skills in action right here. Beautiful evening. The wind died down as the sun sank in the sky. I was raised on the Mississippi backwaters. The scenery never gets old...

The Untouchables - Hats You Won't Part With

My Akubra Silver Spur. We've been through a lot together. My old Stetson that I found in an antique store when I was a young teenager, all I can remember is that it was a John Deere model. It was my first felt hat. My hat before that was a leather hat that shrank and wrinkled up rather...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Akubra Bushman got it's maiden voyage. Our power was finally restored so I could fire up the tea kettle and give it a shape.

Ask a question, get an answer

I got ahold of them and they said all the hats have the same sweatband installation so exchanging would be pointless. I decided to keep it. I shaped it to my long oval head. I can still feel the scratchy stitches on my forehead but at least they aren't digging in. I might decide to replace the...

Ask a question, get an answer

Yes, it should bell outwards. The stitches should not touch the forehead, that's the purpose of a reeded sweatband. The stitches are sharp feeling and not comfortable to have against the forehead. The hat is actually large on my but I am a long oval so the front gets more pressure. It's new so...

Reason enough to return/exchange a hat? The sweatband is not flanged at all, it's just sewn flat which leaves the stitches digging into my forehead. Sewing a new sweatband is a pain so I really dont want to have to do that but it seems rather unwearable as is. I otherwise like the hat.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

I took this old stetson to work to shade my head from the hot sun since I had to work outdoors today, I was glad I had it because we had a terrible storm come through. It was my rain hat the rest of the day. Now I sit here in my basement, no power. No AC. Worst of all NO FAN to sleep. Most of...

    Akubra Woomera

Thanks! That's an American Vintage 58 tele. Great guitar. As far as tips for the Woomera, I just worked it by hand with steam from an electric tea kettle. I did it a few years ago so it's hard to remember exactly. I do remember that it took a little time and patience. Work the large side rolls...

    The Resistol Roundup

Stagecoach. This thing is my outdoor work hat and it's seen some action. First time out, about four years ago, we both went for a dive in a lake. It's been waterlogged so many times that I think it actually likes water. I throw it on when I need to work outside in the pouring rain. It fans...

    Akubra Overload

This is that Silver Spur that I wore for years. It needs a new sweatband. If I can find a nice thin sweatband I might just have to give it one and keep it going.
