    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Great idea! I've contemplated sticking my head in a big plaster mold. Haha. I'm not necessarily looking to make a perfect band block shaped exactly to my head. I just want somewhat of that egg shape in it. My head is pretty much exactly the shape of an egg.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Yes but I am a long egg oval so I'm wanting to shape the hat at least somewhat to the egg shape. It naturally forms that shape over time or with steam and shaping but you cant do anything about the resulting brim distortion. If I shape the hat with a slightly egg oval band block while forming...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Nice! The price is certainly right but I think I need a wooden one. I was thinking about getting the wood band block, sanding it on the sides toward the front to a slightly egg oval to better fit my head, then tracing that on the ply wood and cutting it on the outside of the line to accommodate...

Hatters Supply House is a little difficult to get ahold of, their business hours are the same as my work hours and they dont seem to respond to emails. They dont really have an order form on their site, it says to email them. To get started I plan on getting: #52 block 6 inch height...

    Akubra Overload

That's a shame. I would understand having them temporarily discontinued since the factory is scaling back but that sounds like they dont plan bbn on ever getting them back. I'm glad I got my two when I did.

    Akubra questions

When new they are fairly stiff. You could probably hold it by the brim with minimal flex. However, after rain and handling, they become soft. My Imperial Campdraft which is very much broken in, is very soft and almost "floppy". You cannot pick it up by the brim without the brim bending all the...

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

I'm getting ready to order my supplies, I havent decided which company/companies to order from. I noticed on Hat Blocks Australia, they talk about their crown height to head size ratio. I haven't heard mention of this from any other maker. I thought it was interesting. Here is their comment on...

    Akubra Cattleman

I like the look of some liners but I always end up removing them. Not only do they add heat but weight as well. I used to have a cattleman with a liner, I removed it. Had to cut it around the vent holes.

    Felt Blistering?

Are they salt deposits that made their way there during drying after cleaning? I can see that happening if hat dried crown facing down. Maybe stiffener that dissolved and deposited there. I'm curious as to what others have to say.

Nice! I've been curious about the Kentucky Rancher for some time but I figured the brim would be too short for my liking. Yours looks great. I'd like to do a telescope crown.

Photographs Of Hats Fresh From Surviving The Elements

Had to do some repairs to the chicken coop after work. It's been raining all week so I've been wearing my new Bushman to break it in a little.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Thank you. I read through the applicable parts. It's a little confusing in spots. I'll have to read it a couple more times.

At this point in the book, the brim would be pressed with the sand bag. What do you use? Can it just be ironed? I'll most likely be using a flat flange which temps me to just cut a hole in a table.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

Thanks, that makes sense. I have a basic understanding of the processes but I'm trying to wrap my brain around all the tools.

    Hat making?? Learning Millinery..

I'm thinking of placing an order at hatter's supply house for a block and flange as well as a few tools. They offer a finish on the wood, is that a good idea? Does the flange slip down over top and rest on top of the brim or does the brim rest on top of the flange? I was thinking the brim sat...

Sunrise Hat Company felt (nutria) and hatters’ tools

I also got mine today. Mine is natural which is also lighter than pictured on the site. It is fairly flexible for a western. The crown is decently thin but the brim is fairly thick. The texture isnt as smooth as I was hoping though the crown texture isn't bad. Inside the crown reveals much...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

I took the bushman out searching for fall mushrooms. I love being in the woods when it's misting rain. Cool foggy days are almost as special to me as hot summer days.

    Akubra Overload

I went looking for some fall mushrooms after work. It was misting rain so I figured it'd be a good time to start breaking the new Bushman in. I shaped it more or less like my other one. My plan is to wear this one and not worry so much about keeping it spotless and keep the other one looking...

    Akubra Overload

I like the Bushman so considering the current state of things I figured I'd better get another just so I'd have an extra. I bought this one in size 62 since David Morgan seems to run small. Sure enough, it's a 62 but fits like all the other 61's I have. It'll shrink up to fit nicley. I...

Photographs Of Hats Fresh From Surviving The Elements

I didn't get a picture right away but one night a few weeks ago I left my yard hat, a resistol Stagecoach, out on a stump. Sometimes I take it off and forget I left it outside. I went to bed to the pitter patter of rain not thinking a thing. Then I woke up in the middle of the night to thunder...
