Two dandy $1 yard sale finds...
Return to the Scene of the Crime: A Guide to Infamous Places in Chicago (some interesting then and now photos)
Forgotten Weapon: U.S. Navy Airships and the U-Boat War (large, well-illustrated hardback that lists for $50)
A friend's dad, who is now 90 and...
You decide if this is weird; I thought so...
I was at an antique mall in Frederick, Maryland recently looking through old magazines. In the June 15, 1942 issue of Life (Vinegar Joe Stilwell on the cover) the photographic essay is on "Negroes at War." A few pages after the end of the article...
I recommend this CD

It has only the adagio 8 different ways: including strings, flute...
When this fad first kicked into gear over two decades ago there was a Frank Sinatra movie in which he was Ol' Brown Eyes instead of Ol' Blue Eyes, but I don't recall the title. I assume this process has gotten cheaper and a little faster to do. It used to cost $3000 a minute and take two weeks...
Iron Eyes Cody (the crying Indian PSA's)
He was actually of Sicilian descent but looked the part.

Pretty timeless; still effective. I've never so much as thrown out something as small as a wadded up gum wrapper nor will even spit.
Mondays at 9:00 PM on the History Channel. These two guys dig through old barns, buildings, and junk piles for vintage treasures. Gee, I guess I've been an American Picker all my life but didn't have a name for it. Well...Pack Rat, maybe. We're the first to hit a development site to blast...
Oh, yes, there will be blood...
I should have mentioned if you've never shaved with one take it S-L-O-W and E-A-S-Y. Make sure your whiskers are softened with hot water or a hot towel and well-lathered. It's quite a bit different than today's twin, triple, quadruple blade Schick. Nicks are...
I've passed a few in my travels
Actually there are several still out there, and they have their own glass quart and half gallon bottles (leave a deposit). This one has delivery trucks painted black and white like dairy cows. Here's the web site: http://www.southmountaincreamery.com/home.php...
Washington County, Maryland
I frequent this one nearby: the road by Devil's Backbone County Park, Route 40 into Boonsboro, location of Nora Roberts' B & B and bookstore, past the George Washington Monument dedicated in 1832 and the South Mountain Inn where there is more food than your stomach...
I feel your pain...
Watching "Super Max" is as close as I want to get. I truly appreciate your underappreciated job, sort of like a necessary evil. I'll take the dynamite, cast boosters, and ANFO I use everyday over that. God bless you, sir.
If I bought every one of these I ever came across at flea markets, antique shops, etc., I would have a five gallon bucket full of them. They're very easy to find; some still in original boxes or travel/keeping cases. The latest one I picked up was made of brown bakelite for wartime metal...
Rock blasting for the construction industry
Here's a video on Photobucket; over 600 holes and 10,000 pounds of explosives in the ground. A typical day's job.
Could this be it?

Or is it too recent?
This one's a little older...
Benicio del Toro (no kidding) as Moe and Paul Giamatti as Larry...so far that's it. Don't shoot me; I'm just the messenger.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383010/
I see that the budget was $85 million; I hope that's on screen and not in someone's paycheck.
Off topic, I always thought del Toro would have been a good choice to play John Birch, considered the first casualty of the Cold War. He bears a resemblance to him, but Birch was 27 when he was...
What a unique place
The closing costs are almost $27,000; at least you could s-l-o-w-l-y get that back in the gas you wouldn't have to burn by using an antique reel mower. After all, the lot is just over 3000 square feet including the house.
These are the first ones built in 50 years and will be put in service with all new safety features. They're full scale 4-6-2 steam engines, not toys. The media link on the web site will take you to several youtube videos. What a rush watching it pass, belching smoke, hissing steam, and having...
Have any of these been mentioned? This is a big thread.
Paper boys...and girls; real kids wearing canvas "saddlebags" delivering the daily rag on bicycles and flinging them onto w-i-d-e porches and into bushes.
A small airport a mile out in the country amidst the cornfields. The name has...
from filmjunk.com; imdb gives it a 2011 release
Universal has picked up the film rights for The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, a comic that imagines what would happen if horror author H.P. Lovecraft inadvertently unleashed his creations upon an unsuspecting world. Rumour has it that...
