Wow, the 1942 satchel for 11 bucks was a real find! I have a bag like GraveRobberGreg's that I picked up at flea market. It is US marked and probably 60s vintage. I use it as my everyday briefcase, but the leather really has cracked and ripped at the seems so I'm shopping for a new one.
My Dad was an old time Marine and his opinions of them were similar to the above mentioned vet's...permanent reminder of temporary insanity. Probably colored my thinking on tats coming up. These days they are very popular, accepted more and more. Like another poster said, if I could think of...
Wow Belly Tank, good eye! I missed the rivet. Guess I need to go back and look at the movie again. I've never been able to differentiate the narrowness thing on army/marine roughouts, but the rivet should be the clincher. So I guess McQueen had correct boots and jacket, but like you said, the...
I used to use my Dad's old angle adjustable safety razor and soap and a brush...very golden era. It was great and I miss the experience sometimes but these days I'm sorry to say I use the omnipresent Mach III and yes, you guessed it...Edge gel !! Although I could see myself getting back into...
Flitcraft,
I think Sefton and Salve pretty much nailed it down. I responded on the other thread about the boots...they do appear to be Marine Corps boondockers. As I said in the other thread, the Army did have a very similar "roughout" ankle boot also, but the toes were a bit more rounded...
Interesting info on the black bird. I'm a big fan of the movie and have looked at some of the statues available on ebay. I'd love to have a decent repro for my office.
Flitcraft,
I think what Paddy was talking about was the narrow "drainpipe" khakis and roughout "boondockers" not being very likely to be worn by an Army Air Force officer in Europe. I personally always thought McQueen wore the Marine boondockers 'cause he was a Marine veteran and they...
For what it's worth, I have a goat US Authentic A2 that I bought a year ago and like it very much. I post every now and then on the flight jacket forum and I agree that US A doesn't seem to get a lot of respect among many jacket buffs. Nobody would claim that their jackets are as authentic as...
Paddy- I know what you mean about the implausibilty of the drainpipe khakis and boondockers and sweatshirt...I always thought since McQueen was a Marine veteran that might have influenced his choice of boondocker footwear for the role! I love mine, and wear them all the time. Timelessly cool...
JPS...I agree wholeheartedly regarding Cape Fear. I was just telling a friend the other day the same thing, that Mitchum is much scarier and menacing than De Niro. It's another classic Mitchum performance...understated and perfect!
Wow...what a day of programming on TCM. Today we've had/will have The Maltese Falcon, The Uninvited, The Philadelphia Story, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, Father of the Bride, and Topper! The Uninvited is my favorite ghost movie...so elegant and eerie and no cop-out ending. Good day to sit in...
My avatar hat is the Stetson stratoliner I've previously posted about. I bought it about fifteen years ago in a antique shop for three bucks. I'm looking for a whippet now, or something along those lines.
Here's another pic of the HRA collector grade. Guys, for some really good info on the M1 operating rod cut/un-cut safety issue go to Scott Duff's website...I'll give a link. Scott is the the author of THE collector books on the M1 Garand and a nice guy to boot.

Love your M1, Andy. Here's a pic of my 1955 vintage H&R made M1. This was a CMP collector grade, meaning original finish and parts. This one was used very little. Papaya, thanks for the kind words on my Webley. Yep, it would qualify as an Indy Gun. If you go to the Indy Gear site you can find...
Great response, guys. I know a couple of choices on my list, and some of yours, are not properly "golden era" but hey... we're doing this for fun, right?:)
I've gotten some food for thought from the lists posted so far. Keep 'em coming.
Of course the Cords, Auburns, etc. are amazing. The Dusey SJs are the ne plus ultra of class and style. But for something I could actually conceive of owning and driving around, I've always liked the '39 and '40 Fords, preferably a convertible.
What Andy said....
It just takes time. Try not to obsess about it too much (but you will)
Try to get out and DO things
Other fair maidens never hurt, when you're ready.
We've all been there. It'll get better.
