Jake, I agree Out of the Past is awesome. My personal favorite...
There was a good biography of Mitchum a few years ago that drew its title from a great line in that film..."Baby, I don't Care.":cool2:
Vertigo is tops as well. Perhaps the ultimate Noir, yes.
Michaelson,
Sounds like you have some very nice watches to tote around. A friend has a nice 18 size Elgin BW Raymond that was his grandfather's watch. I don't carry my Hamilton around as much as I used to do. My wife gave me a nice wristwatch as a wedding gift so I wear that one most of...
I must admit, my chief interest in the old railroads would have to be RR watches. I'm a watch collector and the old RR watches were marvels of precision and beauty. My pride and joy is a Hamilton 992 made in 1911 that still runs like a champ. I have a good friend who IS passionate about...
D.Hats, Thanks for the kind words on the old lid. It looks ok in the pic, but up close you can see it has a fine coating of dust all over it. It's really not terrible, but I'd like to freshen it up a bit and I'm concerned that over time the dust might be harmful.
I'm always looking for a nice vintage tuxedo that would fit my 44 Long frame. This is my modern one that I'm getting by with for now. It's OK, but not vintage.
The pic is a shot from my wedding a couple of years ago...
I posted this pic earlier in the thread on fedora vs. trilby. My old stratoliner has gotten a little dusty over the years and I'm wondering what the best route is to take to get it looking spiffy again. Is this something I can do myself or is it best to let a pro work on in it? Thanks from a...
Darne, I sure like your taste in pistolas. The big Colts have always appealed to me, but I haven't broken down and gotten a New Service yet. Your custom NS Colts remind me of something Skeeter Skelton might have written about Dobe Grant and his guns. Ever read any of those stories? I like your...
Yeah, I collect pistols. I posted a pic over on the Golden Era board under a similar thread about vintage firearms. It's a 1917 production British Webley Mark VI in .455 caliber. I'm glad to see from earlier in the thread I'm not the only Webley fan around. This is a neat old wheelgun, and it is...
I'll have to keep an eye out for the DVD at walmart. The Maltese Falcon is one of my all time favorite flicks. I could-and do- watch it over and over again. The acting, story, dialogue, EVERYTHING in the film is just great. Bogart as Spade is endlessly fascinating, and Bogie is so convincing...
Interesting article. A few years ago I read the book "A Girl and a Gun" about film noir and found it really fascinating. The author called Hitchcock's "Verigo" one of the ultimate Noirs...which I hadn't really thought of before because it was filmed in that vibrant technicolor and we tend to...
I love vintage firearms. My Dad got me interested in them when I was a kid. Here's a British Webley Mark VI revolver I recently acquired (similar to but not as rare as the Webley-Fosberry automatic revolver that Sam Spade refers to in Maltese Falcon.) This Webley is a big .455 caliber revolver...
Unfortunately, I'd have to go along with B.Bob...marryin' and buryin'. I wore a suit for the first time in quite a while last Sunday for a funeral. I have really strayed from my "inner dandy" as I was always pushing the envelope as a teenager, wearing sportcoats with jeans and trousers even in...
Man, you know you've found a group of kindred spirits when there is a discussion of member tuxedos, WITH PICTURES! I'll see if I can round one up of mine. It's a modern double-breasted peaked lapel job that is fairly decent, though no vintage piece to be sure. When a working class stiff like...
Thanks to Zach for posting the link to Magnoli. I'm in the market for a new suit myself, and have been looking for a three-piece anyway. I collect old watches and a vested suit makes it easier to sport a nice pocket watch around:)
Well, relieved to get the good word on my hat. It's marked on the inside of the hatband John B. Stetson "Royal Stetson" and "Stratoliner." I don't have any pics of the liner or sweatband snapped yet...
I'm from the Raleigh area here in NC. Good to be here and thanks for the responses!
This is my first post and I thought I would use the opportunity to find out what my old Stetson would be classifed as, trilby or fedora. As it has the narrow band around the crown, I always thought it was a trilby. I picked it up at an antique store almost fifteen years ago for three dollars and...
