Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

I agree with December - or she squee'd like a school girl as soon as she got somewhere more private! (Or, you know, posted it on an internet forum, in a full circle kind of karma loop!)

    Show us your hair do's....

I wish I had the patience to get better at styling my own hair - these looks are inspiring! Annichen, your pics are amazing! the new hair color: That growing it out thing still hasn't happened. I'm sneaking closer to copping Psycho Sue's color though.... One person at work even...

    OT: My parents

Tough situation, shopgirl61, I'm sorry to hear it. My mom's mom had a long fight with Alzheimer's, and we did home care for more than ten years. It was hard on us all, and I can't imagine how my parents got through the stress of it. I know what you mean about the mean thing, caring for my...

    Sewing Lessons & FAQ

So bias tape and I are enemies, I think that's all there is to it. I've got a house dress for my mom about 2/3s together, started bias taping and bam broke a needle. Replaced it with a needle of the same size, and sewing stops working. I test on a piece of scrap and it works, I try doing just...

    Best beauty decision you've made?

So nice to read a thread about things that are making people happy! (esp since I'm about to strangle my sewing machine!) Cutting my hair - I had long, thick auburn hair all the way to my waist. It was great hair. I was the girl with the hair. It totally dominated everything else though, my...

    Baby soft feet!!!!!!!!

My feet are a pretty impressive mess but I would probably be terrified to see them peel like that! Also, I would so not be able to let it peel without 'help' - this product very likely would go quite poorly for me. Looks amazing though...

    Show us your vintage patterns!

Went back to the hoarders. Bought more patterns. She'd gotten a huge box in, but there were all from the 70s! Here's most of the haul: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51031230@N03/ First sewing pattern is two non-vintage house dresses for my mom though...

Best repro/retro patterns for vintage styles

I love the Ceylon dress! Someone here (Cici?) made it up, and that was the first I'd seen of it. I've been in love since. If you go to the gallery, you can see other people's versions. I have always thought the one that is supposed to sell it does not do he dress justice!

weight gain options, yes you read it right

Hehe, love the ad Halfjill! Lady Pearl - as always having been on the lean side myself, what kind of weight are you trying to gain? Are you thin all over (not enough fat over all)? Are you slight (not enough fat and muscle)? etc... All of these things are pretty different physically, and...

The shortest hair in the 40s and 50s?

Can't forget my favorite short cut (and the only one left on my to-do list. If only I get so bold!) Jean Seberg is pretty much late 50s into 60s, but I think she rocks the short hair. I've had it maybe an inch longer than that, in a much more Audrey Hepurn cut.

    Show us what you've made!

Just got back from vacation and jumped back into the project I'd cut out before I left. Wow you folks are inspiring! Cici, I love the pants, and the anchors are so cute! NicoleAnn - that turned out So well! It looks like a great pattern too, totally dress up/dress down. The contrast...

    Show Us Your Purchases!

The Ballerinas are super cute, but I second the 'damn, you're figure!" that beige dress is showing you off so well! I love it!

    Show us your vintage patterns!

Thanks SheBear, I do resize (or in my imprecise fashion - fudge) sizing pretty often, but I'm actually a 32 bust, so a little up isn't huge, but that far... scary. The bottom pic was actually a Cotton catalogue from South Carolina Mills (Spartanburg SC - so the label says) The dresses were 6$...

Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Black Dahlia and Miss 1929, any Marilyn is a good Marilyn! Way to show them some style, Annie, was it set? A week after I reddened my hair, one of the more senior members of the staff came over and said "You're going the Lucille Ball route huh? It's cute." I said, that yes my hair was...

    Body Shape Questions

I've been reading along, and found this thread totally fascinating. I've got a pretty straight forward hour-glass shape, but way broad shoulders and back. I kinda love it, because I think it helps me wear clothes like a hanger =) AnniePancakes, everyone's got a different boobage situation...

Ziplocks are a great idea, but how do you file them, for lack of a better word? I've been using the page protectors and a huge three ring binder, but the tops are of course open.... I'll go back to the shop after my vacation this week (they're only open the ends of the week) and see how many...

    Show us your vintage patterns!

Folks, I did something very good or very bad. The local antique/vintage/junk shop I love is sort of going out of business (I believe the owners are hoarders, their "shop" started in the house, then the garage/guest house then another location, and it's all *crammed*) I went looking for...

How did they keep their hair-do's from week to week?

Hah! I knew I'd find folks with experience with dry shampoo! I've just started dabbling in it. I got my hair colored a bright red (brighter than it's natural auburn. It's now edging on cherry red). I'm not a frequent hair washer since it's not naturally very oily, but even my regular washing...

    Dressing vintage in the workplace

Interesting thread all! I loved catching up on it... I work in an office with a lot of people barely skating by on the dress code line. We can wear jeans and sneakers, but both are supposed to look tidy. Most of my coworkers are guys (the odds are good, but the goods are odd, as the female...

    Bride's wedding gloves

I have a pair of vintage net fingerless gloves that a bride wore in the mid 50's... they were part of a box of handmade lace and the sort. No finger loop at the front, they were a bit more like wristlets, and flared out above the wrist. I kept them since I thought they would be pretty cute for...
