Those look like relatively advanced patterns for a new sewer! Start learning as soon as you can and work your way up before trying to tackle them - pillowcase or lounge pants, an apron, a skirt, then a few other projects before starting on dresses with set in sleeves, plackets, collars.. good luck!
Annie, the US may be bigger but we don't all have luck! I've never found anything good at a thrift store. Just like the UK it depends where you live and whether or not there's a vintage seller buying up everything before you find it.
