    New Old Tube Radios

They're pretty cool, I support any effort to bring back vintage styling and technology to our mostly bland modern component equipment. Now if they could only start manufacturing vacuum tube types that are hard to find for actual vintage radios, that would be amazing. The costs for some of...

    Back to School

Yeah, even though I haven't been in school for some time, the psychological impact of the constant "back to school" advertising on the tv and radio do make me slightly depressed. Now I guess it's mainly because it symbolizes the end of good summer weather, which never lasts long enough here...

    LizzieMaine on TV

I just watched the show, you were great Lizzie. :eusa_clap They did mention the "Winner Center" in the narration.

    LizzieMaine on TV

Thanks for the helpful information Lizzie. Very cool that you also have an RE-57. I would like to eventually buy proper equipment to transfer these old recordings to digital files. Cost may factor into how "professsional" I go. :-) Too bad about this show not mentioning Seth Winner for his...

    LizzieMaine on TV

Hi Lizzie, Judging by the orange star label record I briefly saw in the History Detectives episode preview video, I'm certain that the record being played is a Victor Home Recording. The earlier version of Victor Home Records had a white label. I own a number of these records, some of them...

    '40s/'50s Nat'l Geo Ads & Articles

Great stuff 'Gene, I've amassed a small collection of 1930s - 50s National Geographics but haven't scanned any pages yet. That's mainly because I didn't want to break the spines, the pages are tricky to scan as bound. Love the one for the Philco beam of light. It's a great technology that...

Show us your Thrift and/or yard sale finds

Cool! I have the exact model of weigh scale, found it at a garage sale. I also couldn't resist that brand name. Mine is painted white and the metal bars on either side of the foot pad are coated in chrome, like the dial scale housing.

How do you like your oldies music?

I prefer to listen to the original recordings on original equipment, but for convenience I listen to quite a lot in mp3 format on my ipod. Although, I'm usually playing that ipod through a 1940s radio with phono input! :) I like to have the recordings in good condition with as little noise...

Tell me your best method for cleaning LPs & 78s!

Thanks vitanola, I haven't washed any Columbia pre-1924 records with the method I mentioned above. I should have written more about records to take a more careful approach with. It's also a "no-no" to wash many of the early coloured label 78 records of any sort, just because the label graphics...

Tell me your best method for cleaning LPs & 78s!

I put about ten 78s at a time into a sink full of luke warm water with a healthy amount of dish soap mixed in and let them soak about three minutes. I leave them in absolutely no more time than that, mainly because I don't want to risk labels peeling off. While the record is submerged I use a...

    "Louis" (2010)

Wow, here's a NEW silent film. With live musical accompaniment performed by Wynton Marsalis, Cecile Licad and a 10 piece all star jazz ensemble. "Shot by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond as a modern re-imagining of early silent film, LOUIS is an homage to Louis Armstrong...

    Vintage Table Fan Find

Very good to hear it was easier for you to clean your fan, usually the older ones are easier to clean. As you mentioned, the blades and cage can be removed, but some of them are tricky. I also took the cage and blades off the 1950s fan I posted earlier, but found that no matter how I...

    My "new" Radio

Cool radio! It should already have an RCA input phono jack in the back that they can adapt to take an external source, such as an ipod.

    Vintage Table Fan Find

Speaking of the 1950s fans with blades you have to clean inside the cage.... I bought this fan at a garage sale in early 2010. It was filthy! But at least that was the worst of it, the fan blades rotated very evenly and it looked as if the grime may be hiding a paint finish that was still...

    Vintage Table Fan Find

Looks great so far ForgottenMan! :eusa_clap Beautiful! I'd rather have the blades nice and bright as well. If it was originally tarnished the first owner wouldn't have bought it back in 1919. Hopefully you were able to take the blades off when you polished the fronts, it's such a pain to...

    Vintage Table Fan Find

One thing I plan to do in the near future is to directly mount my old fans to the wall, up and out of the reach of most curious fingers or paws. :) Nearly all of the "table" fans seen in this thread (so far) have three or four holes in the base, meant for bolts or screws to convert these into...

    Early Art Deco Radio Lamp.

Thanks, ForgottenMan. Several radio lamp designs were produced like this up here in Canada. There was another similar lamp at the same auction with sculpted boys and dolphins, but I passed on it because the globe had been shattered. I put a freeze on buying console radios as I've run our of...

    Early Art Deco Radio Lamp.

"The Hunter" radio lamp Very cool radio lamps ForgottenMan, et al. Like dhermann1, a radio lamp was on my wish list for a long time. I finally got this one (named "The Hunter") through a local live auction in April of this year. It's made of some form of light cast metal that's finished to...
