Stock prices you can see on the website, around 850 these days, specialty hides usually up the price by 300-400 USD, minor modifications to their existing patterns come cheap, full custom designs cost more. They are very helpful and forwarding to their customers, they did stuff included in standard price for me in the past that other makers charge for, hefty too. They are great people really, especially Alan. love the man.

Lead time depends on what you want and how busy they are, dont think I ever waited more than 4 months..

There is nothing mysterious about them. They make leather jackets, it isn't rocket science. Just email them and tell them what you are looking for.

How are they with repsonding to emails? I were quick with a few email, but after the 3rd, silence...

If they don’t respond within 3-4 days just call them. They’ve done that to me. Its a small shop and they get busy.

This.. .... Did they ever respond and did you get a coustom order?
I emailed them about a few questions and they were quick to respond. But the moment I ask them how to start a custom order, they went silent.
Yup, they did. But in my case, I ended up returning the jacket I posted about in another thread, because they agreed the bunching in the back was due to the hem being too narrow for me. They offered to refund, but I asked them if it would be possible to start a custom order and consider the amount already paid as advance payment, and they agreed.

How long did it take for them to respond?

Anyone with bad experience with Johnsons? (Can DM me in private) Still havent responded to my original emails after 1 week? I sent them a question with different email and the response was kinda quick. Some red flags.

To add to the question. How about their type I. I'm thinking of ordering. I was told that rugged west makes a very high quality type I. Any comments?

No clue about RW. I know the owner, when starting out, came here looking for feedback/hype from the members. Looking at the RW site it looks like they've fancied things up a bit, with prices to match. I think I'd prefer to go with Johnson at this price point. RW also obfuscates the country of origin on their site which doesn't sit right with me. If I recall correctly it's Pakistan, which I have no qualms with, but I dislike the practice of not explicitly stating where things are made, especially when positioning yourself as a premium product. Again, no issue with Pakistan-made jackets (I have two in my closet at this time).

Yeah, I'll go with Johnson. I have had three jackets made by them and they're all absolutely great. I saw the RW site, pretty slick, but I don't know anybody who has a jacket from them. Johnson is safe bet. Always great service and results.

Nothing against RW, some of their jackets look great. But JL is on another level and would be my choice without hesitation. I still want them to make a jacket for me someday. Reading through this thread should help you decide.

The deal with Johnson is they are still primarily set up as an in person location and don't have a huge made to order demand, such as Aero or other more popular brands. I live about an hour and a half from them and the few times I've been by, I've seen the same faces and they're mostly people that have worked there for many years/decades. The best bet is to call them during business hours, as was stated in another reply. I'm playing to go there within the next couple weeks, so if you want pictures of something, let me know and I can send them to you. It would be great if they had a dedicated online person and a more robust ordering system, as their quality and in person service really is quite good, especially considering their prices.

You have to call them. They are very good with making what you want. Alan and Damon are very responsive and helpful

JL is a top brand in my book. I have been to the store several times. I always spoke to Mr. Lam. He was a great man. He crafted a jacket for my Paris-to-Kazakhstan motorcycle trek. When traveling to SF I always visited Mr. Lam. I even stopped by once during my honeymoon in SF. Regardless, I always enjoy each visit. I have several jackets made from them.
