Post your aero zippers

Hello all!

I’ve see some discussion on aero’s zippers, but hardly any with visuals. I’d like to see different types and colors and sizes on the jacket. I’m curious to see how each size looks on a jacket, and any issues with the zippers anyone has had.

I’m thinking of requesting a YKK/Universal #8 in brass. I’m worried #10 will be too flashy in brass and worried that #5 might not be able to handle the weight of the CXSH. Overall, I’m curious on other people’s experiences with different style zippers.

-Anyone find #10 to be too big or #5 too small?

Please post pictures!

Thank you.

There are a few threads on this already, but it has been a little while since they have been re-opened.
Aero will not do a #8 or #10 in their jackets, that would have to be added by a third party. It was a problem a few times for me while I still owned Aero's.

I recommend Thurston's -- Carrie will help you out well there. However, I do not think larger zippers will occur, but its' been 4-5 years since my last order, things may have changed.

It will still be built by Aero, so will only be able to have the zippers they offer.

I've got a horsehide Aero 30's half belt with a number 5 Talon on it and it's a little fiddly to do up but works ok. I think they might offer Universal zips now, I've got a number 5 Universal on a Flat Head jacket and it works great.

I've had quite a few aero jackets over the years and the standard zips have always been strong enough. I think alot of the people having zip failures are maybe squeezing into a jacket that's a few sizes too small.
The modern Talon repros aren't particularly well made IMHO, the difference in casting quality between them and a NOS USA one are night and day.

Talon is not great even on lighter hides. Early on I got stuck and had to Houdini out of it.
No damage but annoying. It did not happen again but I'm always careful doing it up now.

Universal works just fine on heavy CXLSH.
I guess a #8 would be slightly more convenient but #5 does the job.

Cosmetically the shape of the pull is almost identical, the stop is slightly different.
Once zipped up you won't notice the difference as the zipper is pretty much invisible.

If you got stuck once, you likely will get stuck again. It happened to me in my Aero ThunderBay. The second time I was stuck, and finally wiggled my way out, I sent it to Johnson Leathers and had a proper #10 zipper installed. That killed my desire to have anymore Aero jackets.

Knock on wood it's been 7 years and no other incident. But yes, always very careful with it which is not ideal.
