ELMC Californian size 36 fit check for smaller/narrower frame?

Hi everyone,

I’m considering an ELMC Californian in American Walnut, size 36 (the smallest available), but I’m a bit worried about the fit given my build. As an Asian guy, I tend to have narrower shoulders, a smaller frame, and fairly slim/thin limbs overall compared to typical Western sizing charts, so I wanted to get some outside opinions before committing.

My measurements:

• Height: 168cm (5’6”)

• Weight: 57kg (126 lbs)

• Shoulder width (measured straight across): approximately 40.5-41cm (16-16.1in)

• Chest (relaxed): 82-82.5cm (33.07 in)

• Chest (expanded): 86cm (33.86 in)

• Waist: 78cm (30.71 in)

For reference, I’ve attached photos of myself trying on a Real McCoy’s Nelson (size 36) in Japan, along with the official size chart for that jacket:

• Pit to Pit: 20.3” (51.6cm)

• Shoulders: 17.3” (43.9cm)

• Sleeves: 22.8” (57.9cm)

• Length: 22.6” (57.4cm)

The Nelson 36 felt reasonably good on me (not perfect, but wearable and not sloppy).

For comparison, here’s the official size 36 Californian measurements provided by ELMC:

• Armpit to Armpit: 19” (48.5cm)

• Shoulder to Shoulder: 18” (45.5cm)

• Sleeve Length: 24.5” (62cm)

• Back Length: 23.5” (59.5cm)

One challenge I’m facing is that there are no authorized dealers or stores in my country where I could try this on in person. On top of that, I understand that European/American brands and Japanese brands often use somewhat different cuts and measuring methods, so comparing spec sheets alone can be tricky and not fully reliable.

Given these numbers, I’m mainly concerned about two things: the shoulder width (about 0.7”/1.6cm wider than the Nelson, which already felt slightly loose in that area) and the sleeve length (24.5” — noticeably longer than the Nelson’s 22.8”).

For those with a similar build, or anyone who owns both jackets, would this size 36 Californian work well for me, or would it likely look too broad in the shoulders/too long in the sleeves overall? Any thoughts on the fit as a whole are welcome too!

Thanks in advance!

Why take a risk if you can get a jacket as well fitting as that Nelson with no risk at all? Just go back to the store and grab this. The Eastman has weird handwarmer pockets IMHO and the sleeves will be way too long for you, that's you playing yourself.

I think you have your answer.

I'd also be a +1 on the RMC. I own the ELMC in question. While it feels like it fits well, it visually looks too large in the shoulders and I'd be concerned that the hem would be too tight if going down one size. Eastman's Californian is kind of a weird pattern. It's very V shaped and the pocket angle *****. Fit would be best for very athletic types with wide shoulders, muscular chests, and narrow waists.
