So what do you guys think; do you want me to delete Leather and Metal's posts as too AI for our forum, or do you want me to leave them up? At first I was going to delete the initial post, then I got distracted.

After "his" responses, I am inclined to leave them up, but this is your forum. I will accede to your wishes.

To my understanding, OP used AI (merely) to better express his own (genuine) observations and opinions when otherwise the language barrier would have prevented that.

I’d say, this is a use of AI that is profitable to our community.

I think the Leon custom was advertised as having 2mm horsehide but it was never advertised as Shinki and I did not care for the leather. It was rubbery and not very malleable and not great color. I owned and sold the 2mm Leon custom and the fit, leather and pattern were not acceptable at over 2k$.

AGAIN…..with the hit and run, delete and retreat contributions that further diminish the integrity of the many previous informative contributions of an obvious serial poster.

Impulse posting then remorse deleting is a real thing.
Especially when one feels “everyone needs to hear what YOU think”!
Initially interesting, inevitably boorish and non-lounge worthy.

Sorry for the thread de-rail but damn boy, take a beat before keyboard therapy @jchance.

I heard this quote today and I thought of you: “I do not concern myself with the opinions of people who misunderstand me.” I do what I want and I don’t care for the flame baits here and there. Happy holidays to you, too.

Getting back to Shinki, they are known for not being consistent with their leather deliveries even within a single batch, so I would not give any general description of their leather as ti is so variable. When it comes to FCL, their 2mm jackets, I saw several ones, in London at an official dealer and several shops in Tokyo, none was near 2mm in thickness - which is ok as long as you don't advertise it falsely as they did. FCL relies too much on tricky marketing from what we have seen over the years.

And there is no such thing as the "best leather" or the "best maker".
You are right. This is exactly the marketing strategy of FCL, which aroused my curiosity about this jacket. So I came to personally verify whether the promotional content of FCL is true.

They had a model that was advertised as 2mm, forgot what they called it. And the ones I handled in the shops were nowhere near that thickness.

Edit: it might have been this one, notice the prominent 2mm mentioned in the title
The advertisement for my product states that it uses 2.3mm leather. I have the official advertising image saved in my phone, which clearly indicates the use of 2.3mm leather.

I found such information at the official FCL dealership in the UK. The Leon model comes in both the Shinki version and the Leon No-star version. The latter uses 1.8mm Himeji leather. Of course, there may also be issues with the overseas version I mentioned.

I think when ppl hear 2.2 mm they think oh this must be a tank compared to my other jackets. It won't necessarily feel any different depending on how its tanned and finished.

Unless people are dissecting the panels I'd be inclined to think that's what's happening.

Indeed, tanning processes can yield vastly different results for leather. The question then arises, does the labeled thickness of leather truly represent the thickness of the finished product?

Thickness vs density vs stiffness aren't always connected like people would imagine

From a technical point of view:
Density does not affect stiffness. Only weight.
Thickness affects stiffness.
Stiffness depends on thickness (cross sectional properties to be precise), elasticity of the material (the E- or Young's- modulus) and the boundary conditions (that's why jackets with more seams such as multipanelled models feel stiffer).

2.2mm is subtantial for a leather jacket, of course you'd feel the difference with other jackets... if it were truly 2mm or more that is.

I can tell you having a >2mm jacket its not noticeable. I notice a thick wool lining or a denser heavily oil stuffed leather more.

Yes, just like the Horween CXL horsehide leather used by Aero, although it is claimed to be only 1.4, it leaves a deep impression on people in terms of its texture and thickness
