Y'2 Leather x Buck Mason Collab Grizzly Impressions

Hi all,

I didn't see much discussion about the Buck Mason x Y'2 collab so I thought I'd make this thread.
I just got the grizzly jacket and, although I had low expectations since I thought they might cheap out or overcharge for a collab item, it exceeded my best hopes and now I think this may be one of the best value grizzly jackets out there (if you can get your hands on it). Also, the return policy makes it way less of a risk in case sizing doesn't work out compared to most other stores offering similar high end leather jackets.

I normally opt for a 42 in Japanese leather jackets which I find varies wildly between makers and leathers; even with Y'2, a 42 fits a bit more snug than I'd like. However, this jacket in a size Medium fits absolutely perfectly, fitted but not tight at all, and there is no straining against the horeshide as you might expect.

The pattern seems to be the same as Y'2's own Grizzly jackets, a more modern take without the belt but I personally like that as it makes it more wearable despite still being a bold jacket. It has nice handwarmer pockets, a solid zipper and a lining that is cozy but still not so warm that you can't wear it during fall or spring like a thicker wool lining might be.

The color combination is great and I don't see this as any worse quality than my other Japanese leather jackets, and in fact the nice color variation from the hand dyed panels is something unique compared to other grizzly jackets.

Given the price tag ($1600 all in after tax), I really can't think of many other grizzly jackets that have this solid of a value and look this good, and imo this color combo is more versatile than the black/white or black/light brown patterns you often see.

The only thing I was (initially) disappointed by is that the mouton/shearling panels are not the same plush kind that you often see such as with the RMC grizzly or even Y'2's grizzly jackets, but is rather has a curly fleece-like texture. However, I think this might make it a bit hardier and is also yet another way it's a bit distinct compared to purely repro grizzly jackets.

Wondering if anyone else has any thoughts on the collab or bought any items they would like to share their opinions on?

I've found that the buck mason collab items are usually of a slightly lower quality than the originals. I bought a few pieces from Brycelands and Anatomica collections (denim westerners and chinos, respectively) and compared with original versions I had picked up in Japan last year (that unfortunately no longer fit me). For the brycelands denim, the fabric was less hardy and did have the same hairness. Anatomica chinos also felt to be slightly lighter weight. Quality control also seems a little off. For example, Brycelands denim shirt had some exposed fraying internally as the seams were not perfect on the fabric edges.

thats a bit of a shame to hear. I have never bought any buck mason, but been intrigued by their collabs. I guess ill just stick to the original brands

Congratulations on this jacket, the color combination might be the most appealing to me and more practical than some of the other ones I have seen with more contrasting. I tried that jacket on in the store and I wanted it, thought it was foolishly going to go on sale. Buck Masons fits tend to be all over the place especially with their collaborations. The horsehide is heavy so it should take you some time to break it in. Hopefully you get some wear with it, and if you sell it later please let me know.

I also picked this jacket up after missing it initially. Grabbed it when a Large came back in stock 2 months after the collab (I refreshed every day just to check manually).

It's a steal at the price, and the leather quality seems top notch. The one "oh maybe this is where they cut costs" is that some of the shades of dark brown are clearly slightly different colors (on my jacket and I can see it in the pics above). That possibly explains the price reduction. I like the denser mouton personally, but I'm probably mostly indifferent. I really like that it's tonal to the leather, makes it look less flashy since the entire grizzly concept is loud enough.

What I think is truly remarkable is that Y2's stories about the grizzly is that it is really hard for them to make and so they only release it every 5-10 years. For it to just be a Buck Mason collab, at a lower than typical price... well I don't get it.

Either way I think it's by far the best pattern of grizzly I've tried on, especially with Buck Mason getting more American-sizing (I think the pattern is slightly different than Y2 standard sizing) and leaving off the belt.

I own the non buck mason grizzly in this colorway…paid over $2k, so was shocked to see how cheap BM was offering the collab.

The browns being different colors isn’t anything new for y’2. Most of their pieces have variations. Some look at this as cheap, others as the natural part of the dyeing process.

Here are some pics of the non collab version.

Beautiful jacket! I don't think I would wear a two-tone one of these enough to break in the leather. The single tone brown is the way to go. The Flashy enough to require absolute swagger, but in one color so it can be your daily 'oops I dressed better than everyone' jacket."

Figured I’d give lousy fit pic. This is a large. I love that it’s not a cropped fit and I can easily wear it over a sweater or a collared shirt. I definitely like my leather jackets to fit a bit larger than some of the current modern styling.
