I am partial to Manhunt by Nars, probably because it has some sheerness to it. I have very light skin and tend to find matte reds overwhelming on me.

Besame just announced a new red lippy called American Beauty. Looks good, but I don't like their new samplers. The previous one had little pots with lots of sample!

Not very vintage, but my favourite lipstick is actually Maybelline Superstay 24 Color. It's the only brand I've been wearing for years, daily, except for photo shoots. I just love that you don't have to worry about stains or smears. I usually do a quick touchup after oily meals and remove/reapply once if I go out at night.

Favorite colours are Cherry Pie (a rich cherry red which I wear most of the time), Burgundy (the name says it), Red Passion (fire engine red) and Pink Spice (a rosewood colour somewhat darker than my natural lips, which I use if I want to tone it down a notch). All four work nicely for my beloved 40s inspired looks.

After years of searching for a red lipstick that looks appropriate for the late 1930s and early 1940s, yet does not make me look like a circus clown pretending to be a pin-up, I think I've narrowed down my favorite choices (in no particular order):

-- As someone else said earlier, Maybelline Super Stay 14 Hour Lipstick. My favorite color is Timeless Crimson. This has a deep rich red color and a totally matte texture. I don't love the fruity flavor, but that disappears immediately. From what I'm able to tell by looking at 30s and 40s magazines, this one may be the most period-correct of my top 3 favorites.

-- Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick, Fifth Avenue Red. This is the brightest and least "blue" of the four, but still totally wearable. I had heard about these recently marketed Revlon "vintage" lip colors, but haven't been able to find them & finally got this from ebay. I don't know whether these are reissued colors or new formulations, but Fifth Avenue Red is just about perfect for a head-to-toe Golden Era look, in my opinion.

-- Lancome Sheer Magnetic in Fearless. A rather dark red that is appropriate for work and doesn't look dated or costumey.

I've tried Mac Ruby Woo and other popular red shades, with no great success. They still seem very bright on me. The general look I'm going for, on a daily basis, is middle-class respectable late 1930s or early 1940s, mildly frumpy; i.e., not pin-up or glamorous, just nicely groomed. Whenever I wore bright red lipsticks I would get comments from friends and coworkers, and that's absolutely not what I was looking for (not at my age or station of life.) I'm not even sure the comments were always meant to be positive, either.

Oh, I LOVE a bright, glamorous red lip. I understand that others prefer their reds to be more subtle, and that's fine, but I MUST have bright or nothing at all. I'm quite fair and it makes a real statement on me.

That having been said, my favorite red lipstick has changed over time. My mostly neutral coloring supports all sorts of reds, but after years of experimenting I've learned that slightly warmer works best on me. My turning point came when my previous favorite, Besame Red, let me down. After much fierce loyalty to that particular shade, I discovered that they seem to have altered it to be both slightly darker and bluer. I was devastated and I finally chucked all of my reds that pull too blue for my tastes.

These days I am in love with Revlon's Love That Red and Julie Hewett's Rouge Noir. I may be giving Besame Red Hot Red another chance soon, although last time I tried it I felt it was just a tad bit orange. I'll let y'all know. LOL ;)

Oddly, I find that my favorite lipstick is Avon Ultra Color Rich. It stays on very well and doesn't dry out my lips. I have it mostly in pinks, but I did just order myself a coral color recently!

I'm a huge fan of the Sephora brand lipsticks. They're really nice quality, tons of colors that you can try on before you buy, and the price isn't bad either. My favorite is probably Passion Red, which is a deep, cool toned matte red.

I have never tried any of the Sephora lipsticks. I did have a lipgloss once, but I disliked it because it had gritty glitter and an unpleasant scent. That shade of red sounds lovely, though. Do you have any photos?

Just did my first successful transfer of a MAC Russian Red to a 1950s Hudnut case.

When I bought the case for $3 it had a never been used Radiant Red in it but it was to far gone to use. Got so sticky the holder wouldn't turn and I had to scrape it all out, dismantle it, and give it a long soak.

It amazes me how much bigger modern lipstick holders are for the same sized lipstick.

Black Dahlia, this looks amazing.

I went a bit wild these days and ordered something new.
It arrived yesterday, and I wore it to work today.

Avon's lipstick in Tangerine Tango.
I never had my lips in that color before - it's refreshing. :D

Wow, what a lovely lippy Stray Cat! I bought something similar lately that has little flecks like yours, I'd never heard of the company before, Kiko.

I just found the perfect Holy Grail red lipstick (for me) at CVS: NYC Sheer Red. I don't think it would work for you ladies who like a bright red lip, but it's exactly what I've been looking for. It's a true blue-red, very moist, rather matte, and sheer enough not to be too obvious. I can wear it everywhere. Best of all, it sells for ninety-nine cents. As soon as I'm done with work I'm running out to buy a few more tubes, since it's a sure-fire guarantee that any lip color I love will instantly go out of production.

I don't have a photo of it right now, but here's a link:
