Yeh, I always thought it would have to have the wool stamp.
This is the only thing given on the sweatband and the liner is just the simple logo seen in the first pics.

To me that definately looks like an older Mallory... Most the new ones have "Mallory by Stetson" displayed pretty prominantly. From what little I can see of the felt... Id venture to say yours IS fur felt

Thanks.
Fingers crossed - it looks like I may have found a good'n at a really nice price. And a "bird band". Haha...

Still contemplating what the finished product will be, but I am a sucker for a sale, so I grabbed a FEPSA 100x rabbit felt in black cherry from Pure Beaver. I missed out on ebony, which would have been my first choice, but also had never picked up the 'new' black cherry (although that was really a Winchester thing? I digress). I also grabbed some more vintage Japanese fabric (as is my wont) on etsy, which might become the liner, or might become a non traditional band. Haven't built a hat in a while, but got the itch again. Also dipping back into the rabbit felt waters. I have an idea about some decorative stitching, and seemed prudent not to splurge on beaver.

Well the new-to-me Beaver Major now has a ribbon. I didnt have any grey or pewter ribbon that rang my bell so I did the safe fallback to black. I DID decide to go with a 1-1/4" wide grosgrain so all the side moth nibbles are fully covered. Still have a couple little "character" nibbles up front and up top, but theyre not a big deal. Its all sewn in and there were zero finger pricks or bloodstains (thats a big accomplishmet! Always room for another nice grey hat!

All ready for the coffee shop in the morning! Time to go fire up a pipe and celebrate with a big bloody mary

That's a nice one Rick. The felt looks really supple, and I like the wide ribbon!!!

My new lid still hasn't come in, but I did get some of the vintage ribbon I was looking for.
I just put some on my Stetson Stampede which had been giving me fits with the modern ribbon. Wow... What a difference!
I had never run into this issue much in the past, but as you can see in the pics here of the new ribbon, the contour where the body meets the brim is pretty extreme. This new ribbon has totally covered the sweatband stitching and lays against the felt perfectly all around.
And of course, now that I've found this ribbon, I've got more stuff to spend $ on. L O L . . .

I will be working on this Akubra that was shipped from Good will in a plastic bag.
I have purchased other hats from Good will before and they were always at least shipped in a box , not sure how this happened.
Its an Akubra it should steam right back . View attachment 685334
Ahhh! the old " hey look it fits in this envelope" trick.. Ive seen that a couple times lol. I got one hat stuffed into a shoebox once. At least its an Akubra... hard to seriously damage them

I had an eBay reseller (whose “Grandad” sells a lot of hats) ask me to ship a Resistol Beaver “30” western that way if they won. Thankfully the hat sold higher than their flipper budget allowed.

That was a future return in the making…
Considering what "Grandad" asks for his hats... he can afford $5 for shipping a box! I tend to keep everything I buy. but I always try to keep several Hat sized boxes and packing material on hand just in case I need to gift one away( If I dont already have a hats original box). We ALL have Amazon boxes laying around. No excuse for cheaping out on shipping

I need to find a good source of "real" vintage wider grosgrain. I can usually get modern ribbon to work as long as its less than 3/4" wide . Trying to iron a curve in modern 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" ribbon is a chore I dont enjoy. Id love to have big rolls in several colors and sizes, but I just havent found a lot of affordable vintage stuff (Yet)

I found a source on Etsy that salvaged some rolls of the vintage wide stuff from Italy. Unfortunately they have sold out of most of the colors. It's unbelievable how easy the old stuff curves compared to the new. Not really sure why we can't just find similar cotton/rayon ribbon in any old fabric or craft store, but they never carry any.
