Can't believe how stiff this thing is. I used so much steam on this hat you would swear you were at a pipe fitters convention. Not the crease I wanted but apparently it's the crease the hat wanted

You didn't say what you use for a steamer but when a hat is really stiff like that I have had good luck with lots of hot steam that has a lot of hot water content to the steam. Really soak the felt pretty good. The hot water will penetrate & soften the stiffener better than just steam alone. When the felt cools to the touch it is time to steam it again. Just use tap water, but because the water is boiling it purifies & will not mark the felt. So if you are just using a tea kettle then you may have to come up with something else.

My moonstone CD was probably the stiffest felt I have encountered so far & I got it pretty wet with hot water & steam. I use an espresso machine with a brass boiler that has both a steam tap & a hot water tap, but it I barely crack open the steam tap I can get to a point where it will sputter water out with the steam & that is enough to get the felt hot & wet. I think the heat to soften the stiffener is the trick.

Hey, that looks pretty cool !! A tequila name from the times Don Julio was still family owned by the Gonzalez family from Atotonilco el Alto Jalisco !!

1980's to 2000 Those were the Golden days of Don Julio !!

Don Julio Gonzalez, dad of Francisco aka "Pancho", the Mastermind of the Don Julio rise, began selling tequila that he carried on mules, protected his product himself with his .38 Colt Revolver, and began a formal tequila business in the date that Tequila is named after.

Sad story, they, the sons of the late Don Julio, Pancho and Eduardo, sold the company, got a lot of cash and.... Spent it !!! They got into a very rough time, for maybe 7 or 8 years, now they are doing better and have another brand "Reserva de los Gonzalez"

That is my second favorite brand, Reserva de los González, after 7 Leguas, both Highland tequila, both from Atotonilco, both get scarce and hard to get, then it helps to know the owners, you can get a case at a discount price even when it's hard to get.

The .38 Colt got lost, and 12 years ago someone found it and Pancho bought it... He has it displayed in his new tequila factory.

Cool overall story behind that Don Julio bottle..

High end Añejo, maybe a little bit overpriced, should be close to the $180-$200 bucks a bottle up there !!

You didn't say what you use for a steamer but when a hat is really stiff like that I have had good luck with lots of hot steam that has a lot of hot water content to the steam. Really soak the felt pretty good. The hot water will penetrate & soften the stiffener better than just steam alone. When the felt cools to the touch it is time to steam it again. Just use tap water, but because the water is boiling it purifies & will not mark the felt. So if you are just using a tea kettle then you may have to come up with something else.

I am waiting for my Moonstone CD to arrive, it takes 6 weeks from Australia... Maybe a couple more due to the holidays !!

I have used a sprayer with warm distilled water for my CD's, just make it wet enough to crease it and it worked very well.

Mine were also stiff, but as I have been wearing them they have become softer and softer, right now my BGG is very soft, almost like a vintage felt of high end felt feeling !!.

You will love it.

Wearing this Resistol Stagecoach conversion again today. I did a little tweaking to the pinch and made it tighter and I reflanged the brim again. I was trying to get a little closer to Alan Ladd's China hat. It has a nice tall straight crown with a 2 5/8 brim....here's the redo, (the picture of me wearing the hat is closer to the actual color).

Nice hat, great radio, gorgeous lamp !!

And absolutely frigid day, literally and figuratively. -5 outside. Went to a funeral today for one of my oldest and closest friends who was taken on Christmas in a senseless act of violence.

No worries Chamuco. Plenty of espresso ground beans get pressed thru this group head. I had to replace & lube the seals just a few months ago. And I still buy coffee out daily!

Wet heat is definitely the key to softening the stiffener & to getting that clay like feel to the felt.

Chamuco, I have a BGG that I love! Came out of the box nice and pliable. Took the bash I wanted with no problem. This Silverbelly is not cooperating at all. I wanted to put a diamond bash in it but so far no go. I'm going to give it sometime to see if it will soften up a bit then go at it again. I'm using a tea kettle.

Hey all!
A stunningly beautiful sunny gorgeous day here on the NorCal coast, and that's not just the newly legalized plant matter talking.
While we're talking about plant matter, this Parabuntal has a very fine weave, which makes the brim flap in just a light breeze. I had put a structurally strengthening curl in the brim by hand but it just looked a little off. Thank goodness for a Homburg flange to properly do the job I was intending to do before.
Breaking the rules...straw on New Years Day!

I'll probably have to switch to felt soon, but I'm enjoying it while I can.

That's tough. In a similar incident I lost a good friend back in October in a drive by shooting. He was shot in front of his own home with his wife watching. They never found the killer as far as I know. He was gone before the paramedics got him to the hospital. He was a good guy who loved to laugh and talk sports.

Jeez, that's a real shame. What a world we live in.
