The year is starting off on a cold note. Had to go with a fedora for the first time in a couple of weeks in any case. Marathon.

You didn't say what you use for a steamer but when a hat is really stiff like that I have had good luck with lots of hot steam that has a lot of hot water content to the steam. Really soak the felt pretty good. The hot water will penetrate & soften the stiffener better than just steam alone. When the felt cools to the touch it is time to steam it again. Just use tap water, but because the water is boiling it purifies & will not mark the felt. So if you are just using a tea kettle then you may have to come up with something else.

My moonstone CD was probably the stiffest felt I have encountered so far & I got it pretty wet with hot water & steam. I use an espresso machine with a brass boiler that has both a steam tap & a hot water tap, but it I barely crack open the steam tap I can get to a point where it will sputter water out with the steam & that is enough to get the felt hot & wet. I think the heat to soften the stiffener is the trick.

Taking down the outdoor Christmas display. You have to leave them on til New Years for good luck. Nice day for my Stephen L. Stetson c1958 "work hat". This one is my go to for outdoor chores.

My grandmother and mom would leave the Christmas decorations until Jan 6, Three Wisemen's Day. They arrived after Jesus' birth with the gifts. Fond memories. The wisemen wore crowns not a nice Stetson like yours.

This is the bash I was looking for

Try creasing a Western weight felt like a Resistol. I found that a tea kettle isn't enough for these modern felts. Kettles are okay for spot work and touch ups. I found that a pump spray bottle filled with water works wonders for getting the crease you want. If you're not sure of your water quality fill the bottle with distilled water. Pop that baby back out to open crown and get it wet, but not soaking through. You want to get it just wet enough to where it's moldable like clay. Put in the crease you want and set it aside to dry. It works. I do all of mine that way, and it works on Akubras too. I got a nice crease out of my Squatter with that method.

EDIT: Don't forget to remove the liner before you get the hat wet. It should be tack glued in four spots, at least my Squatter was. Peel the liner off carefully though.

Well, I'm holed up in the warmth of the home today - doesn't look like I'll be motivating out and will remain (mostly) hatless. But I wanted to wish my friends a Happy New Year and wish y'all the best for 2018.

It's not a complete loss, today. I finished re-blocking, flanging, and getting a sweatband into an older piece of felt I've been sitting on for a while. I thought I'd get the ribbon/bow on today, but that doesn't look likely now. I did, however, steam, brush out, and crease a Royal Deluxe I picked up on the Bay last week.

May the new year bring everybody a wealth of hats and great BIN deals on eBay.
