So what makes that hat a 1940's hat? Would really like to learn more about your dating system.

TJ; I like the thin ribbon hat. I am confident that your wife will see your passion for looking sharp in a hat. Mine did after witnessing positive comments and having the novelty of me wearing a hat around her wear off over every day wearing.

Rusty; I do like the lines of the hat. I have always wondered why hatters did not provide the ribbon changing option to more hats.

Andy; My that is a NICE HAT! Truly sharp wool jacket. You have worn it in a variety of combinations and it always comes out on top.

David; The Powell has many similarities to the Stetsonian. Not details, similarities. You wear that hat very well. Excellent style.

Alan; The heather felt and brim treatment of your Borso really catches my eye. While I see it's casual air, with a topcoat and suit that hat would work for an evening out. Your pic shows you looking very sharp. I do really enjoy this hat in your collection.

I have read the nutria comments of late and add that I have a aquired a recent nutria Stratoliner. My first nutria, to my knowledge. I will have to spend some time with the hat, but the first go thru has me appreciating the felt pliability. It is not incredibly smoothly densely pounced felt as my silverbelly version, but it whoops up the brown and gray "deluxe" versions. Smoothness and pliability are not necessarily dependent characteristics. Pliability it very high. It acts like a couple of the light weight beaver VS felts as to pliability. It resists the start of the creasing, but then once reaching the critical yield is easily compliant. The standard caveat of not all models and felts can be apple to apple comparisons apply hold hardily to this circumstance.


I shot a quick pic of my VS sage Stratoliner clone waiting for me to head back to the gym. The thin ribbon hat will work tokeep me stay warm and comfortable in the cold, new snow.

Thanks for the comments on yesterday's shot. I like the hat in isolation, but it's not an easy hat to wear. Definitely an occasional hat, rather than a regular piece.

Right. I am going mid 50s based on the liner. Mid to late 40s Stetsons had "American Manufacture" under the crest. This one does not have that feature. There are many treads on this, and I am by no means an expert, so if anyone has other info, please correct me. Liner pic below. Cheers!

Yes, I was aware that the hat was Canadian made, that is why I was challenging and pressing you so hard. I knew you were using the liner as the basis for your dates. The guidelines found here on the lounge really only work on American made Stetsons. Canadian Stetson's were still using that liner logo in the 60's(and maybe later too). Here is a couple photos of the liner still used in the 60's.

I have been studying Stetsons for may years and I have no idea if your hat is 40's, 50's or 60's. They are a different creature.
