Opera And The Moon

A lovely, warm, and sunny weekend for us in Minnesota. The moon was also at its fullest and brightest of the year during the Mid-Autumn Festival.




Early Saturday morning at one of our favorite flea markets. Pair of flanges, one of which, a 7-5/8 with 2-3/8" brim. Rescued from a possible fate as picture frames.

Glorious copper Palmette Acroterium, salvaged from the Grand Opera House of Duluth, Minnesota.



Completed in 1883, the magnificent Grand Opera House was destroyed by fire in 1889. A survivor of the 1889 inferno, this acroterium will now be admired once again and saved from a potentially sad fate as scrap copper.



Amidst a dozen ladies hats on a rack, a real gem. Elusive, early derby by Gordon of St. Paul, Minnesota, belonging to one Q.L. Briggs. Detailed photos to come.



Quite a few sizes too small, but what the heck, it is a wonderful derby and a spectacularly beautiful day.



Every Spring and Fall I look forward to seeing my old, old friend Bob Johnson at his Minnesota Military Collectors Show, held at the State Fairgrounds. Ryan was thrilled to find this prop for his next, period film. Thompson M1A1 non-gun, with original stock, sling, grip, handguard, front-sight and box magazine. Carved wood receiver and barrel. Not quite the archetypal M1921 "Tommy Gun" of Prohibition and Depression-Era gangster fame, but it will do nicely.

At the Ordway in St. Paul for the Minnesota Opera's 50th Season opening production of Giuseppe Verdi's "Nabucco".












Wonderful charcoal drawing of the MN Opera's "Nabucco" done by Mike Reed. While "Nabucco" may not be among Verdi's most popular or often-staged operas, it remains one of my favorites. Seeing the ingenious, candle-lit full moon(on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival) ascend on stage while the chorus sang "Va, pensiero" made tears well up in my eyes.

I think some of these recent photos demonstrate the value of a fedora, sport coat and open-necked shirt in today's style world. Sometimes when I have a fedora on myself with coat and tie, or see someone else in one, I think it can be a little too much--too dressy. I am coming to the opinion that open-necked with a sport coat is the way to go, for wearing fedoras more formally.

depends what kind of look you're going for, I guess. I do like that look Al sports with the open necked collar (great photos and hats, Al!), but if you really wanted to go all the way with the tie, etc., just be prepared to invoke a little more of an earlier decade, and get ready for the mobster comments.

I think I'm going with a Lee silver label homburg today, after adjusting the brim.

Dan: I agree with your assessment, but would add that I do enjoy a variety of different brim widths and crown heights/blocks. I cherish my '20s-'30s straight-sided-crown-narrower brim fedoras as much as my classic '40s and Bold Look fedoras. The OPTIMO Beaver Belly above, with its 2-3/8" brim and slightly tapered crown, is my wife Lydia's favorite hat. Its modest proportions and rounded contour, together with the Silverbelly color, make it arguably more versatile and au courant.

Jeff: Love the curl you've put into the brim of your Lee Silver Label. A beautiful Homburg that looks terrific on you.

Steve: Always enjoy your fleet of Echter Borsalinos. Beautiful photo as well. I hereby humbly request more natural light photos of all of your amazing collection.
