I am quite proud to be home on the day my mother found the evidence necessary to prove my father’s heritage back to the American Revolution. My great great great great great (?) grandfather fought in a North Carolina militia unit. Online records show him at the Battle of King’s Mountain but there is a ton of inaccurate information out there on this ancestor so we’re not certain yet.

My mother’s side should also go back so far but we have still to find the smoking gun.

To celebrate I wore my new-to-me 3X Stetson out on a commissary run here on the U.S. Army base where my folks live. This photo is actually from yesterday but I wore exactly the same outfit today.

That is such a good looking hat! Congratulations on finding your connection to the American Revolution! I have Revolutionary war veterans on both parents side. A fifth great grandfather served with Benjamin Bellows New Hampshire Militia. He was at Ticonderoga and Saratoga, under Horatio Gates. Also another 5th great grandfather with the Virginia Militia. I find this period of history fascinating.

I grew up and continue to live very internationally. There was a time when I was having a bitter struggle with my American identity, but I couldn’t for the life of me get over the thrill of the Revolution and the first few decades of our nation. Man, what an exciting time! I’ve recently rekindled my love of Americana (interestingly enough through hats and old Jimmy Stewart movies) and now getting more into my family history, but I might have left completely were it not for the nostalgia of the Revolutionary period. I don’t mean to start a political discussion at all, just to agree that that time period strikes deep chords. Be well, DD.

Now that is the greenest of the day for sure! It is a beautiful Homburg. Kind of needs a shamrock in the bow.

My family is
Per special request from the Mattster, I will bring out the "Huggy Bear". It just seemed festive with all the plumage (there are green highlights, some type of exotic chicken...). This Cavanagh rolled brim homburg like creature is all disco...kiss me I'm Irish! No really, there is Irish in my veins, mother's maiden name was McCollough.

Thanks for bringing my this one out Mike. I’ll admit that I would pluck it, but the Huggy Bear has a great shape and color. And though I don’t go for the feathers, this is the nicest of this type of band that I’ve seen. Very nice.

Oh and I wore a Wooley hat today, winter and snow came back in both London and Dublin, awful wierd weather. I've known it snow before on Paddy's Day, but more hail with warm sun afterwards in 1995, but this is cruel. And it was proper cold with a very lazy wind, the type that cuts right through you rather than blowing around you. You all look amazing today.
What strange weather you seem to be having. Apocalypse weather. At least you had a nice hat to face it in.

Well stained up., but suitable for many more years of service I think. May try to get out on the bike if it warms up later. Will need something with a little less windage then

Thanks Roger. I remain stunned that this one somehow ended up at my house.

Those kind of investigations and personal journeys are great experiences. Thanks so much for sharing them with us.

Somehow... It seems perfect to me that James Stewart and hats have played a role in bringing some harmony to how you see yourself fitting into the world.
Not a lot of opportunities to wear a green homburg. Beaver Brand:

That's awesome.

Thanks all for the likes and nice comments on yesterday's green Gannon. I hope everybody had a great St. Patrick's day and moderated their intake. I was supposed to see a friend play live, but wussed out and stayed home with my head buried in Netflix.

As the church I attend is basically, on the campus of U of Dayton, I had to pick my way through piles of hungover students and unused green Jello shots to get to mass. No better accompaniment to such an endeavor as Grandma Anna's Royal Stetson.

BTW - I was kidding about the students, but not the Jello shots.

Thanks to all for the kind words about my hats yesterday.

This morning, I'm heading out to get my Roman Catholicism on under a Knox Madison Avenue.

I hope that all have a sunny day, even if it may find you in a place that is cloudy.

I am sure that God will smile when you darken the door of your local cathedral. That ribbon is a real statement.

Looking sharp in that slim brim Jim. Is that highlight in the ribbon original? Love it.
