I like this one, really a classy hat.

They do seem to be a very tough felt. This one is in near perfect condition and that is some achievement for a 60 year old service hat. I think it enjoyed it's outing on the wetland prairie, though this would be more muskrat country than nutria.

For today's bike outing I went with this straw like sun helmet,

It proved to be a very good companion. Cool ventilation, quiet, comfortable and zero aerodynamic lift. It will see quite a few bicycle trips over the next couple of months.

Thanks man. It is a garage sale find. I have wanted a sunbody hat for some time now but haven't been able to justify buying one yet. I also use a pith helmet for the really hot weather. Just broke out my French model again. I don't do well in any heat over 27 degrees celcius. So anything I can do to beat the heat I love. I now have four. French Indian British and Wolseley.

Thanks for the suggestion. Honestly, my pith looks pretty trashy and probably isn't very photogenic. It has dirt smudges on the outside, sweat stains on the pug, and the inside has been highly modified. The inside of the helmet got wet and the liner sagged. So I cut a few slices into it and injected Krazy Glue and glued the liner to the inside of the helmet, but it's not a pretty job. I also got a sheep's skin shammy and cut a 10 inches by 2-1/4 inches strip and sewed that onto the sweat band to give my forehead sweat somewhere to go. I'll try to take the time to post a pic...but I warn you. It's an ugly affair. Certainly not costume quality. My pith helmet is a "work for hours in the Texas summer" hat.

BTW, if you can't pull the trigger on a Sun Body yet, see if Tula has anything you like that's affordable. I have a "vented gardener" which is basically a wide brim, pinch front cowboy hat with a vented crown. It gets 5 star reviews on every site. Tula has several styles. IIRC, the Montana/Gus/Tom Mix, a Gambler, and a few others too. They're all Mexican handmade palm straw hats.

Thanks Red. It's a Sun Fari made in New Hampshire of Textilene by Wesco. I believe they are still in business, but this was a thrift find.
