As for wool, I never really worked with it much, I went for the good stuff right from the start.
My supplier did send me a sample of a new type of wool felt they are planning on producing, I gotta say, not bad.
I'll have to test it out though.

I guess when I order myself a hat, I am ordering one for her as well (she's been known to steal my hats!). Thanks for the congratulations =)

As for the wool -- is the new product from your supplier a sort of dynafelt? I've reshaped a few vintage dyna's before and they don't feel all too different from 100% rabbit. I guess it depends on the blend quantities...

I've picked up 5 hats for my wife, so now when we go out on the town we both wear hats. She loves it. We love it.

To be honest, 2 of those hats were for me but they turned out to be too small... so now they're her hats! One is a blue-ish grey colored felt, which is amazingly wonderful, supple, and bash-able, a 50's Cavanagh in the original box... and it makes me jealous that it's not mine! Seller said it was a 7-3/8... nope, if you look under the sweat it's clearly marked 6-7/8.

Seller did that and came up with the 7-3/8 hat size... but the size was located by me under the sweat, after I tried to wear the hat and it wouldn't fit down past the crown of my head, LOL.

It is AMAZING felt. I'm sooooo jealous of her Cavanagh....

I almost 100% of the time find that sellers circumference measurements are extremely off ... like way off

I always find the front to back ... side to side method much more accurate if asking for a size measurement ... actually has a pretty much 100% success rate with me

Thanks Anthony, it's one of my favorite hats for sure.
My Turf Club is a Zephry weight and has no liner so I can't compare the two. The Shore Club is a pretty light hat though. One of my lighter feeling hats with a liner. Has great felt on it.

It's a thing. I have so many hats and I try to steal his from time to time as well.

Thats's the downside, I get the make your own and it's to big for you anyways.

It's a pure wool felt but they do something to the hairs to make them less well... Wooly.
Still feels like wool to me but way softer and thinner to the touch.

I just blocked one open crown, we'll see when I crease it.

That's interesting. Fur felt is normally considered superior to wool as the felting process makes for a better material. Now, before I get in trouble with Steve and Daniele, there are a great many high quality wool felt hats that have been produced in Europe, and I would be hard-pressed to dispute these gentlemen's opinions. However, modern American wool felt just does not compare in look, durability, or function to wool felts. D'Aquino sources FEPSA hat bodies, which are high-quality fur felt bodies - not cheap. I own a bunny and a beaver from her (see the D'Aquino thread). My wife has a bunny. The finish on D'Aquinos leave something to be desired, but the quality of the felt is fine, and I certainly don't think mine are "costume-y." I can't see myself getting another from her, though, as my quality/price point opinion has changed now that I have a Gus Miller and a couple of Gannons.

Nope. I want all the info I can get my grubby little hands on. I have yet to buy a vintage hat based on the factory sizing that wasn't a satisfactory fit. I'd much rather have the side-to-side and front-to-back measurements than trust somebody's accuracy with a tape measure on the circumference.

I am aware of the wool blends and the wool hats from the past, but it is just that though. The past.
I have yet to feel a modern day produced wool felt that impresses me.
Then again, when you are used to working with TONAK felt nothing really comes close.

Most give me the itches and god forbid trying to hand block one and make it look nice and crisp.


I am not active in the buying of vintage hats but I would be highly surprised if most can measure the inside of a hat correctly. It's really something that takes practise.

Interesting. I don't have any luck with side-to-side; front-to-back measurements! And sometimes a manufacturer's label can be way off for me too, if the hat was stored in a shrink-inducing environment, for example. Though I'm likely just uber sensitive to a tight-fit since there's no hair on my head to serve as a buffer zone...

I do agree though, that more info is best. Like, when I buy a vintage suit jacket online, I want not only the manufacturer's tag, but an actual measurement of all the bits and pieces -- shoulders, pits, sleeves, back etc etc. With hats, it would be handy to have the same sort of standard specs report in seller listings... Some dealers provide this data, but most do not.
