I almost sent that to Joe and Alan to see if either of them wanted it. Looks like it's an earlier one for sure, nice catch! Can't wait to see better pics when it shows up.

Also I, I'd bet anything it's not a bowler.
Well thank you for thinking of me. I’d be inclined to agree with you… Looking homburg like. Though would be interesting if we’ve unearthed another soft bowler.

Saw @Short Balding Guy (I think it was) post one of these a while back and I’ve been wanting one of my own ever since. Incoming :)

Still waiting on a Akubra Stylemaster from Hats by the Hundred. Almost at the 60 day mark…. I guess this is the drawback ordering from them… But their prices are so cheap!! ‍♂️

I think they buried the lead.

I was thinking “Hey — a nice coconut straw hat in my size”.

Wait … what?

From the 1970s (maybe earlier?).

Snead wore / endorsed Mallory hats in the 1960s.

Indeed! Although that seller at least provided an interior shot of the hat and included a readable picture of the size tag.

It's really kind of astonishing to me how much money these auction houses must leave on the table due to not bothering to attempt to show what they're selling. Sometimes I'll get lucky and get them to provide additional pictures, but sometimes all you have to go on is a hunch.

I guess I understand because they have hundreds of items to list, but it seems like if your business is online auctions you should take enough pictures to let buyers feel like they saw it "in person."

Nice catch, I know how rare those larger sizes are! Also, coconut straw hats are just fun. I have a modern Stetson madrigal and love wearing it.

Picked up my reshaped Penman yesterday. I asked John to put a taper in the crown, like my Optimos.. Top left is how it initially was, as shown earlier, with the straight up crown of the ‘30s and ‘40s. Bottom left is with the new taper, reminiscent of the ‘50s and ‘60s. One of my Optimos to the right.

I am happier with the taper. Unsurprisingly, when pressed, John continued to feel that the original looked better on me, and that the taper makies my face look more elongated. I thought the original dwarfed, overwhelmed, my face. It is probably simply what one’s eye is used to, but I will be wearing the reshaped hat with greater comfort and confidence, which, John agreed, in the end is what matters.

I think to choose to wear a fedora in today’s world is in itself a bit eccentric, so it makes sense to be eccentric in our individual crown shape tastes as well.

Agreed. If you don’t want to wear it then it isn’t doing its job. :) Nice hat!

@jeffgarf sigh…. Thanks :)

I honestly thought I was happy with the hats I currently have from Mr. Fawcett, but this one checks several boxes.

I have a hard time resisting anything from his storefront era in my size, it is an interesting color, and I only recently started looking for a hat with this crown. I can stop whenever I want lol.

VS Art Fawcett Incoming WOOT!
