Starting off with Gus Arnheim and his Orchestra in 1931 with a great wake-up number, "Ho Hum," featuring young Bing Crosby and Loyce Whiteman in a snappy duet on the vocal. One of them was about to go on to great things.

Next, following a commercial for Genuine Pure St. Joseph's Aspirin, back to 1928, Ben Bernie and his Hotel Roosevelt Orchestra with the Speed Boys giving out close harmony on "Let's Misbehave." Not now, I haven't even had my tea yet.

I used to have a 33 1/3 LP record of a 1931 broadcast of Arnheim and his Coconut Grove Orchestra, featuring Loyce Whiteman, Donald Novis and Bing Crosby. Some great songs on that one. I was reading somewhere that the Rhythm Boys (Bing Crosby, Harry Barris and Al Rinker) performed one recording with the Arnheim Orchestra before breaking up. Bing stayed on for a while and Arnheim's radio broadcasts helped to launch his career as a crooner!

Starting off in 1933 with Ben Selvin and his Orchestra and the title tune from the hit political musical comedy "Of Thee I Sing," with a very nice Revelers-like quartet taking the vocal. Selvin's records are never especially distinctive, but they're always pleasant and listenable -- good thing, given how many thousands of them there are.

Next up, back to 1929 with the Crooning Troubadour himself, Nick Lucas and his Guitar, with one of the lesser tunes from "Gold Diggers Of Broadway," "In A Kitchenette." Stop singing and get busy with those dishes, Mister.

Hadn't listened to this group in seventeen years. I worshipped them in the '80s and they broke my heart in the '90s. The "I.R.S. years" music is timeless, I'm happy to say, and I'm not struck by nostalgia so much as hearing the music anew.
