Here is a picture of a Stetson I purchased,not really a vintage hat but note it is a not so common round oval W code note the common R regular oval code.

I think you got one of those few hats that slipped by the QC at Stetson. Your new one should be just fine. It's true, you won't know till it gets wet but from my experience most times, most quality felts do fine in the rain. Some do better than others in shrinking etc. but as a general rule, most quality felts can handle the elements better than we give 'em credit for. I'm not one that has a prejadice for "vintage vs new" OR and will probably be getting a new one this spring when the Shepler's here in my town puts the felts on sale ( won't wear it much till next winter as by April down here it will be Panama time !! BTW, have you got a Panama yet )

Hi JB yes it is a 5X Beaver it is a late 70s Stetson with a bronco style brim curl, I wear Cowboy hats all the time at the Bar,Playing Pool,Etc I try not to wear them in the rain where they would get soaked mainly because if I did that would mean my Lucchese boots would be soaked as well.
These hats wear well in the rain,no worries.
What vintage is the 4x you are dealing with?the later Stetsons are not the same quality as they used to be.

Thing is, I am dealing with a modern Stetson. I do have a vintage Stetson I can compare it to, a Royal Quality St. Regis, but it's obviously different from a modern western felt hat. The later is something I have worn comfortably with no problem, out in the rain, on more than one occasion that I can recall.

I finally did it! I've devised a western hat so awesome that I've decided to start my own thread about it , entitled "Neophyte's 'Western Concept' Hat Project." I will start that thread later on today and provide a link in this thread.

All I can say right now is that it will involve a pair of dice, a playing card (maybe several), possibly some live fire with a .357 magnum, and a custom hat from Mike Moore at Buckaroo Hatters. I gotta go to class now, though, so I'll have to leave you all with this for now. Sorry!

Old style playing cards, those without numbers = you have to count the spots, are out there. I have some from reenacting the War of Northern Agression. Not so sure about vintage dice but pretty sure they are available as well. Good luck with your project, looking forward to the photos....

Use 38s in your 357, or you may not have much card left after 3 rounds. I may sell some old hat bands here soon, including one tooled leather with a sterling buckle set, and a horsehair band or two. I've gotten away from wearing them on my cowboy hats the last few years. Good luck on your project. Frank

I am sure you can get a deck of cards printed without numbers like they did previous to the 1900s at one of the Cowboy Shooter outfitters. Try River Junction. They may have the dice, too...

Thanks for the suggestions . Those cards you all mentioned, I eventually found that they are now referred to as "Faro playing cards". I found some at this site: http://www.parcards.com/cards.htm, which offers a choice of wrapping as well (I'm really liking the Sitting Bull and Wyatt Earp wrappings) .

Also, thanks for the link to the dice, scotty; unfortunately, they're all sold out . I'll keep looking.

Your whole hat concept is intersting for sure Looks like you'd have to buy two packs, one to use in the hat and one to keep wrapped

Sounds cool. Wondering about the size of opening in the card though. Keeping with the motto "Never go to a gunfight with a handgun of a caliber that doesn't begin with 4", I would think about the common Old West Calibers. If it was post 1873, the most common were probably .45 Colt and .44/.40. These are both in .45 Colt.

Then again, if it was earlier, some of the percussion pistols were available in .36 Caliber (such as the 1851 Navy Colt). That would be close to the .357 (or the .38), so I guess could still be authentic. (The Navy Colt was available in .36 and .44, and was the choice of Professional Gambler Wild Bill Hickok, though I am not certain which caliber was his choice). Played a little Blackjack in (sort of) the room where he played his last hand, being murdered while holding the famous "Dead Man's Hand" (Aces and 8's).

Having grown up with western hats around me for over 50 years, your idea is not what I'm used to. It's a bit theatrical in my mind. JMHO

The .36 was quite popular & a .38 hole in the card is suitable for what you are doing....

Was wondering, thanks for that. Also, the .36 (.357) sized hole would leave more of the cad intact. Might look better, actually. Neo, you can probably find someone who loads their own and have them load a few light rounds for you, maybe in wadcutter or semi wadcutter, should make nice clean holes.

And while theatrical might be a good description for the project hat, that may well be the effect you're going for (dramatic for sure anyway). I like it, and it'll certainly be unique!

I deleted all my posts regarding this custom idea to save space on the thread. I may or may not start my own thread to detail the progress of the project. The next time you hear about it, it'll probably be in my hands . The last thing I will say is that the idea has changed a little (mostly in crown shape) after seeing English Bob's hat in the movie Unforgiven. I will eschew the playing card, which after some thought I found to gimmicky. I WILL, however, be keeping the drilled dice. With the kind I have in mind it ought to be understated enough to not draw too much attention.

Back to actual hats, here's one that's new to me, an eBay find. Akubra Silver Spur in Glen Grey. 5 12/" crown, 3 1/2" brim. Feels like a bigger Campdraft with no bound brim. Not sure what shape this one will take in the future, but it was a hell of a deal on a hat I've not seen in this color before. And a 63 at that. Frank
