As with Little House on the Prairie, my parents and I faithfully watched The Waltons until the end of the series. Unfortunately, IMO, the creators let this show run past its prime and we ended up with 70s-looking hairstyles and clothes and the episode with Mary Ellen being reunited with a completely different "Curt", whom we find out (unbelievably, IMO) actually survived Pearl Harbor. Nowdays, I prefer to watch only the shows with John Boy in them. I feel the series went downhill after Richard Thomas' departure.
My parents are native Virginians who visited the actual "Walton" (Hamner) homestead and they were quite disappointed with it. They said the real house was smaller and very ordinary looking compared to the TV version house. I've seen photos of the house and it really wasn't much different looking than the house my dad grew up in (my grandparents' house had a very small front porch and there were only 4 large rooms total inside - kitchen, livingroom, and 2 bedrooms upstairs).
