New life for an old Resistol.

Last Saturday, I got my early 1960s vintage Resistol (Byer-Rolnick era) “17.50” western felt back from Texas Hatters in Lockhart, TX. I bought the hat a few weeks ago and the seller said that it was black – but when it arrived, it looked brown. Indoors it also looks like a very dark green (and my camera does not capture the colors correctly).

It came with the original cattleman crown, but I blocked it to an approx. 6" open crown, recreased it to a teardrop, changed the brim shape (3" brim), and then had Texas Hatters add a contrasting thin ribbon – they chose a sage green.

Hat as received.

I've owned & worn Resistols for a long time plus have a few vintage dress & western models. Do any of you recall this from an ebay seller = "Some may not know that Serratelli was the maker of all Resistol hats. Only high quality American furs were used. This is what Resistol built there reputation on. Resistol decided to go with a different direction in making there hats. Now Serratelli is its own brand and hat manufacture."?

A couple of articles and a video about Serratelli. They're based in New Jersey. One article mentions their "back office" in Texas, but no mention of a relationship to Resistol.

The articles mention relationships with Stetson, not Resistol. Given the time frame talked about here (they seem to have supplied raw materials into the 80s), they're undoubtedly talking about Hatco. Whether or not they supplied materials to the Byer-Rolnick version of Resistol, though...

Hatco produces their own felt bodies now, but have they always?

Fruno, I think you're correct about a possible relationship with Hatco at some point. Given the age of the company there is a possibility they may have supplied materials to B-R.


I found the eBay listing that Tom posted. The seller's description is like a lot of other hat listings I come across, ranging from inaccurate to wildly exaggerated, trying to make the item sound like something more than it is.

Yup, and given that the one article indicates they didn't start making their own hats until at least 1984, it's not that old of a hat,either.

Another contribution to the Resistol Roundup....

3X Resistol. I reblocked and recreased the crown on this one, as I do on all these tapered up Resistols when I buy them. I went with a Diamond crease on this one and accented the Cross inside the Diamond. I also sewed on a 6 ply mid ribbon with just a keeper and a tail, keeping the ribbon work simple....These are also posted in the WHAYWT thread...

Yeah, it's still pretty tall but not like it was. The diamond crease let me lower the crown a tad without making it taper.

You're welcome, buddy. That was one of my favorite Western TV shows when I was a kid, and I still remember the lyrics to that song too! But I have to say, "Maverick" with James Garner and Jack Kelly was my favorite TV Western of all....Roger Moore played their cousin, Beau Maverick. I still remember the lyrics to that theme song as well! Buddy, we're old!
