The scene in that photograph is stunning. It makes me wonder what the expected lifetime of a hat was back then. Were they worn so frequently that they were considered consumable in the sense of socks or umbrellas? Were they considered primarily utilitarian, a stylistic requisite? Surely they didn't revere their hats as we do today?

They were both utilitarian and stylistic, depending on the man, but generally people took much better care of their things back then. The idea was to show the world that you were doing okay, even if times were tough.
