Another The Flat Head jacket owner here - can only agree with your view on the Shinki HH they use - it is absolutely lovely, such fantastic texture and feel. Pics of mine ..

Yeah it’s a completely different hand to any leather I’ve ever felt or seen. In person even folks utterly disinterested in our nerdy obsession instinctively reach out and run their hand over it and start asking questions.

Whatever this “greasing” process is, now Flathead have went under (good ep on the issue btw @dudewuttheheck ), they need to share the secret!
Thanks I really appreciate that! Unfortunately my guess is they will take that secret with them.

The only cash I carry around these days is £1 coin for the shopping cart, that’s it really everything else can be paid by card in London.
It’s so convenient not having to worry about withdrawing cash all the times.

I have to ask. How much wider are the shoulders on this jacket compared to what you normally wear?

The reason I ask is I am looking at a jacket from a Japanese maker and the measurements are all spot on except the shoulders are 1" wider than I normally wear.

I am at 18" shoulder width and this jacket is at 19". Do any of you guys think 1" more width in the shoulders will be too big? I went through all my jackets and all I have is a levis trucker with a 19" shoulder width and it fits pretty good with just a bit of seam overhang over the edge of my shoulders.

Shoulder measurements can be a bit of a mystery. Whether or not they are too wide or narrow when worn seems to depend on how the entire jacket is cut, and the type of build you have. For a reasonably height/weight proportinate westerner, if a jacket has super-narrow and high armholes, like a lot of the japanese jackets, a wide shoulder measurement helps. Conversely, large armholes with narrower shoulders works well too. What you don't want is the opposite...narrow arm holes with narrow shoulders (unless you're extremely skinny) or large armholes with a wide shoulder (unless you're fat)

When people refer to the shoulders of a jacket here, is it exclusively the width of the very top of the shoulders they are referring to? The back of the shoulders is getting very close to the pit to pit measurement...

For me the pit to pit measurement is far more important than the shoulders- if shoulders are narrow or wide it's more cosmetic- e.g. do they look neat or does the seam droop onto the arms. My upper back/lats/chest are big from weightlifting, and makes buying jackets that aren't otherwise too big for me a real pain! My shoulders are pretty broad too, but my favourite jackets have a snug shoulder measurement with large p2p. Depending on the sleeves and the cut, I can get away with a surprisingly narrow space from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.

Thanks all, appreciate the decades of combined leather jacket wisdom; it feels great and the only doubts I get are from staring at the shoulders in the mirror for 5 minutes. It’s the same effect as staring at one word for minutes until it ceases to make sense, and a completely quixotic exercise in looking for something that doesn’t exist.

Thanks mate. Chest is 22.4”, shoulder is 20.8”.
I realize this is an old thread, but I thought I’d update the measurements.

I just received the same size 44 Single Riders jacket from Rivet and Hide a couple of days ago. Mine measures:

P to P 23.5”
Shoulder 20.25”

Perhaps after the re-start they tweaked the jacket measurements a touch?

Regardless, I absolutely LOVE this shinki. It’s much more pliable than the Himel and RMC that I’ve tried before. It also has a lovely sheen and a fantastic smell.

I just got this jacket and I'd like your opinions on the fit. Figured I'd rez this thread instead of starting a new one.

I typically like my jackets snug and form-fitting but they still need to be functional. My goal was to get this jacket in a size that would be neat in appearance while still allowing me to wear a long sleeved shirt or light sweatshirt for winter layering.

This is a size 40, I have a size 40 chest and TFH garments in 40 tend to fit me perfectly. The store I got this from didn't have a 38 for me to compare with.

Overall the jacket feels great but it is roomier than in used to. My principal concerns are the shoulders and the length. I usually like motorcycle jackets landing at belt level but this lands about 2 inches below the belt - which allows me to wear untucked shirts under it well.

What do you think about the fit? There's a side of me that wants to return it to wait for a 38 but it is super comfy in this size and I feel like once the shoulders relax and stop making me look like Grace Jones it should be pretty much aces.

I think it looks great on you. Granted I like a slightly roomier fit, but IMO you got just the right amount of fit and comfort (by the sounds of it).

I have this jacket as well, and the shoulders will settle down.

Big congratulations!!

Nothing about this looks too big. On the contrary, it's spot on. All you're feeling is that the leather hasn't broken in yet.

Thank you for the feedback! I think it's mainly that I need to get used to a slightly longer cut after wearing a shorter jacket for a long time.

As others have noted the Shinki on this is gorgeous. Much thicker and more luxurious feeling than TFH cafe racer, which I was also able to try. It's incredibly soft and pliable initially, unlike some of the RMC Shinki I've handled. Really, really nice.

You’re absolutely right about the leather. It’s superb :)

The leather looks really cool, and much nicer than the shinki on my (long sold by now) RMC Nelson, which ultimately was quite a disappointment for me.

Is this the semi-aniline finish? I was very impressed with that leather when I saw them in their Tokyo store, really beautiful and lot of colour depth. The full-aniline not so much, looked very flat to me even after seeing the owners wearing sample. I also had the same issue on fit though with the high squared off shoulders.

This is the semi-aniline finish. I'm not super knowledgeable in the tanning processes though. I was under the impression that pigmented jackets like this needed to be semi-aniline. Do you know which TFH jackets are full-aniline? I'd like to see the difference.

This D-pocket I tried is full aniline, my issue was it seemed very flat. It softened up reasonably well, I looked and felt the owner's jacket which was used for like 3 years or so, but even with the aging it still looked relatively flat and plasticky in my opinion. He also held it side by side with a semi-aniline jacket and it was a night and day difference, way more depth, had the classic Shinki sheen or shininess and more rich colour in general. I am 100% on the same boat as you are.

I got the hs005 model with a bit different back design than yours.
I had the choice of both 38 and 40 but was much much more encouraged to get the 40 by the guy working there. The 40 fits almost identical as your photo and the 38 makes it look a bit too snug (i could zip up but barely, but the sleeve length on 38 is much nicer imo).

Granted I think the two men working at FH harajuku both wear this jacket a bit larger than I typically see so i can see why he recommended me to get 40.

I've been having remorse ever since I returned from Japan and now I'm just embracing the fact that I can layer a sweater underneath so I can wear it a lot longer during the fall and winter.

I really hope it breaks in nicely and make the sleeve a bit shorter.

Do the sleeves shorten a bit with the arm creases? I was shown at the store with a 1 year old jacket and it got maybe 3cm shorter compared to the new one.
I'm hoping mine will do the same.

The sleeves will definitely get shorter via tunneling as you break it in.

The fit still feels a bit off to me, although I can comfortably layer in mine which I'm hoping will get me to wear it more as winter gets here. I prefer a more vintage length, wheras this has a more modern, longer body - but that makes wearing it with u tucked shirts much nicer.

Got any fit pics?
