Caniff is really smart, he knows we all want to see Burma and Raven tied up, but he didn't give it to us today.

"Raven?! Uh, hi, um, how are you? What's new?"
"You traitorous b*tch!"
"All's not forgiven I see."

Didja ever read Patricia Highsmith's novel The Price of Salt?

Harry Bridges was never deported, although there were attempts in the 30's, the 40's, and the 50's. He didn't retire as head of the ILWU until 1977.

The West Coast longshoremen have an interesting history. Bridges may have been a "Red" but his legacy is a union where even apprentices can count on earning in excess of $100K annually. A couple years ago they opened the books and offered about ten apprenticeship opportunities: over 36 thousand applied! I had fun kidding my cousin's husband (a retired Long Beach and International ILWU official) about the fact that his union was, statistically, a lot harder to get into than either the Harvard Law School or the Johns Hopkins University Medical School.

("I still don' unnastan' how Solly got t'ese tickets," says Sally, gazing at the smudgy envelope securely tucked on the kitchen shelf between a bag of sugar and a can of coffee. "He knows a guy got strips," says Joe. "Annis guy owed 'im a favah. 'At's allya need ta know." "Solly's f'm Brownsville, ain'ee?" "Like I said," insists Joe, "''at's allya need ta know.")

The greatest responsibility faced by Britain and the United States right now is to get as much aid as possible to the Soviet Union in order to ensure that Hitler's offensive is stalled into the winter. So declared Viscount Halifax, British ambassador to the United States, as he arrived back in the US today aboard the Dixie Clipper after spending a month in England. Lord Halifax further stated that only a shortage of manpower is preventing Britain from mounting an invasion of the European continent at this time, but he declined to state whether or not Britain expects the formation of an American Expeditionary Force at this time. "It is," he emphasized, "for you to decide."

The Rapp-Coudert Committee will likely turn its attention next to investigation of Communist-oriented youth movements on the city's college campuses. Speaking before a luncheon meeting of the Kiwanis Club at the Hotel McAlpin in Manhattan, State Senator Frederic R. Coudert Jr. declared that "the right of private belief is one thing. Nobody denies its existence. But, as our committee has already declared thru its counsel, there is no civil liberty to commit a breach of trust." Criticizing those who "pretend to be one thing" while holding contradictory beliefs, Senator Coudert further stated that "there is no freedom in this country to poison the rising generation in the name of any political philosophy which practices hypocrisy and deception as part of its central and vital doctrine."

(Even in 1941 you'd think someone shooting off any kind of a pistol, even with blanks, in the middle of crowd of 66,000 people might perhaps generate some attention from the authorities.)

Yesterday was Mrs. Helen Fitzsimmons' birthday, and the wife of the popular Dodger pitcher celebrated for photographers at Yankee Stadium by giving her husband a big kiss that looked every bit as though she would have done it anyway. Mrs. Fitz was turned out stylishly in a plum velvet suit, a black fur jacket, and gardenias -- and as a good luck charm, she wore the pin presented to Fred by his Dodger teammates in honor of his 200th major league victory last year. Mrs. Fitzsimmons also greeted film star George Raft, who, looking impossibly natty, dropped by their box on his way to his own seat. The film gangster, a close pal of manager Leo Durocher, also shook hands with the Fitzs' daughter, Helen Junior.

Reader Bernhard H. Walsh writes in wondering why the most popular Dodger, as proven by the recent fan poll, never gets much mention in papers. "Why slight Dixie Walker?" he asks. Mr. Schroth notes that the Eagle gives Mr. Walker "plenty of play. We can't speak for the other papers."

Reader Clarence Donnelly writes in to declare that when the new Dodger stadium is built it should be named "McLaughlin Stadium," in honor of Brooklyn Trust Company president George V. McLaughlin -- who, he notes, was the man who had the necessary vision and acumen to bring in Larry MacPhail to run the ball club in the first place. "And what an investment that turned out to be!"

(No, this isn't Sally's brother. He's still got all his hair.)

Brooklyn Protestants participated last night in a ten-hour overnight prayer vigil for peace, held at the Nostrand-DeKalb Methodist Church on Nostrand Avenue. The vigil, the first of its kind conducted by a Protestant denomination in Brooklyn, began at 9:30 pm and concluded this morning. The Rev. Carl A. Bergston led prayers for President Roosevelt, for Congress, members of the Cabinet, and for the nation itself in this time of national emergency. Many visitors of various denominations offered their own hymns and prayers as part of the vigil.

(Just for the record, the Eagle isn't responsible for dubbing Mr. Rizzuto "the Flea." Lefty Gomez, one of his own teammates, came up with that one. But that doesn't mean the Eagle can't use it!)

The Homestead Grays confirmed today that slugging catcher Josh Gibson will be in uniform and will positively appear in Sunday's doubleheader against the Bushwicks at Dexter Park. Gibson, back with the Grays after two years in the Mexican League, is ready to pick up where he left off as the "Negro Babe Ruth," who is to batting in colored ball as Satchel Paige is to pitching. Over the course of his career, Gibson has homered in every Major League park. He began his career with the Grays in 1930, moving to the Pittsburgh Crawfords in 1932, and then returned to the Grays in 1937. He spent last season and most of this year with the Veracruz club.

(Ghost-written player columns are an old World Series tradition, and I hope Dolph and the Flea are both picking up a nice piece of change for them.)

Reader M. A. O. writes to Dr. Brady to say that he is worried about numerous brown marks on his skin and is concerned that he may have a venereal disease. Doc says that any good doctor can perform the "dark field test" to detect the presence of syphilis spirochetes. (And wonder of wonders, he does not offer his free booklet "So You Think You've Got A Dose.")

Fannie Brice returns to the coffee program tonight at 8 PM over WEAF as the irrepressible Baby Snooks, bringing to a close a publicity stunt by the producers intended to build up a story around her absence. You may have heard those transcribed spot announcements with Snooks cooing "Nobody knows where I am!" Well, the sponsor knew very well where Miss Brice was -- she was enjoying a longer vacation than usual this year, that's all.

There was plenty of "that's all you need to know" in the world I grew up in along with its cousins "don't ask" and "don't worry about it," or, more accurately, (said with a dismissive tone) "what are you worried about?"

... View attachment 365959 ("The Senators are not in this Series." Gee, I never woulda known.)...

It would have been better to have won the first game than lost, but in truth, none of this is fun as, when you win, you immediately start worrying about the next game. The Series is just one long period of angst no matter what is happening and you love every moment of it anyway.

I agree, but you see it in the movies all the time; there was, overall, just an incredibly nonchalant attitude toward guns back then.

This would have been a Series-related non-baseball social encounter that would have been fun to see.

I bet plenty in the crowd were sneaking in some prayers for the Dodgers as well.

From what we know of those two so far, "please don't kill my daughter" is probably the more common refrain.

"As long as Veda is Excellency's pet, we'll let her make the decision." Tweaked a bit, who of us haven't had the exact same thought in business many times.

In the last panel, the speaking bubble is pointed the wrong way as it's Veda asking to be excused. It's just funny to see.

Agreed, today made it look very much like an inside job. Where was the golf-pro husband when all this happened? Also, odd that they didn't mention the bloody fingerprint today.

"The Neighbors" could be reprinted today without changing a single word.

... Daily_News_Thu__Oct_2__1941_(6).jpg Is she nodding -- or quaking with rage?...

She's doing both.

Also, I get a kick out of the "blank" background panels, like the fourth one today, as you assume, Caniff just ran out of time.

"We need it now Mr. Caniff."
"Screw it then, just take it as it is."

Oh yeah, there's no "manning up" on this one; marry Veronica in a hurry, go on a long honeymoon and, if you're still alive, settle down in another city.

I've read several of her novels, but not that one. The Ripley series is fun.

The Price of Salt is a lesbian tale later adapted to film as Carol staring Cate Blanchett.
Highsmith also wrote Strangers On a Train which Hitchcock directed. Would that he had taken Salt
on as a directorial statement; alas the times and societal imposed code.

One of President Roosevelt's close and well-informed political associates said today that diplomatic developments appear to be in the making toward the alignment of all of world Catholicism against Hitler. The President is said to be hoping for a rapproachement between the Vatican and Moscow that might lead to an exchange of diplomatic representatives in time for such a development to lead to a new source of worldwide pressure against the Axis. Word of the possible developments followed the President's suggestion that recent statements by the Polish Ambassador might be seen as a wedge leading toward greater religious freedom in the Soviet Union, but Representatives Hamilton Fish and Martin Dies were strongly critical of the suggestion, with Rep. Fish (R-NY) suggesting that the President might encourage "his palsy-walsy," Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin to be "baptized in the White House swimming pool."

Attorneys for Louis "Lepke" Buchhalter have indicated that they will try to prove that the State's key witness against the accused gangland chieftain, Abe "Kid Twist" Reles, has been "quietly collecting shylock money" with the aid of the authorities ever since he was arrested for his role as chief gunman of the Murder For Money Gang. The possibility of such an angle in the case came up yesterday during jury selection for Lepke's trial for the 1936 murder of Brownsville candy store proprietor Joseph Rosen, with defense attorney Hyman Barshay also intimating that Reles has been "pampered in many ways" by District Attorney William O'Dwyer since his arrest, and that such favored treatment may be expected to color the testimony he will provide as a witness against Buchhalter.

Meanwhile, Mr. O'Dwyer denied today that he, or anyone involved in his mayoral campaign, has asked for the support of the left wing of the American Labor Party. The denial came on the heel of a statement by Eugene P. Connolly, chairman of the ALP's New York County Committee, that Mr. O'Dwyer had appealed to the party's left faction, of which Mr. Connolly is the leader, for its endorsement in the coming election, and was turned down. Mr. O'Dwyer subsequently denounced "left wing elements" in the ALP during his radio address earlier this week, and challenged Mayor LaGuardia to reject its support as well.

The son of a prominent executive of the Brooklyn Trust Company married his Passaic, New Jersey sweetheart tyesterday -- paying off on a promise that they'd marry if the Dodgers won the pennant. John Barnewell, whose father is both a vice president of the bank and of the Brooklyn National League Base Ball Club itself, had proposed to Miss Anne MacIntosh five weeks ago, and she agreed -- if and when the Dodgers took the flag. Last Thursday, Mr. Barnewell bounded up to Miss MacIntosh's door waving a copy of the Eagle with its gigantic WE WIN! headline, and they immediately set the date. Following a simple ceremony at the Little Church Around The Corner in Manhattan, the newlyweds honeymooned at Yankee Stadium where they cheered on the Flock in its 3-2 win over the Yanks.

"I'll suit up myself! Nobody need know the difference! Phelps' uniform will fit me, won't it?" "Well, sir, to be honest, it might be a little tight...uhhhh, sir, please, put down the ash tray, I'll run right over to the clubhouse now and get it...")

Dolph Camilli predicts that the emphasis will shift from pitching to batting as the World Series moves to Ebbets Field today, predicting a real high-scoring contest as both teams look forward to popping the ball hard around the Brooklyn ballyard. But he's also even more confident now about the Dodgers' pitching, pointing out that the Yanks couldn't really do much of anything with Wyatt yesterday -- especially in the late innings when the Bronx boys couldn't touch him.

Joe Medwick has given up on lightweight bats, abandoning the 35-ounce models he's been using this year in favor of his old 46-ounce models. Ducky has also stenciled "GET HOT" on each of his bats, in case he needed any reminder.

Mr. King has been evolving the most in recent years of any of our artists in how he draws Black characters. It wasn't so long ago that he would have drawn this fellow in a "Mushmouth-like" style -- but the realism of the strip and the evolution of the times are pushing him away from such things. He will continue this evolution in the years to come.

After unpacking this incredible sentence, you realize it is a very '30s/'40s mob-in-America story. There was a reason Hollywood was churning out so many mob movies in those years as it was telling America about itself.

I had time for one ballgame yesterday and boy did I make the wrong choice. I watched the 2021 Yankees throw batting practice for the Blue Jays when I could have listened to the 1941 Dodgers tie up the series versus the Yanks. Bad choice.

Also, more great pics from the game today. They have to have a lot of photographers there.
