Mr. MacPhail was waiting up at 125th Street for the incoming train, which he had ordered to stop so that he could get aboard to be part of the arrival scene at Grand Central. But Leo, fearing the train would be mobbed at the smaller 125th St. station, countermanded that order, leaving Larry standing furious on the platform as the train whipped thru. In a red-faced rage, he will fire Durocher on the spot, and Leo will remain fired until tomorrow, when Larry, hung over and repentant, will forget the whole thing.

Mr. Powers, you may recall, was among the loudest voices in support of moving the Brooklyn games out of Ebbets Field. You will note that he has the good sense not to bring it up again now.

That handbag has doubled in size between panels three and four, and THAT is a mystery I'd like solved.

The first eight minutes are a large chunk of Paul Douglas's nightly baseball summary over WEAF, in which he waxes poetic about the Flock's victory. The next four minutes come from WOR's live remote from Grand Central Terminal as the Dodgers arrive and are mobbed by their fans. Red Barber speaks, very briefly, with Chuck Dressen, Whit Wyatt, Leo Durocher, Fred Fitzsimmons, and Hugh Casey (who sounds completely in the bag). Then he switches to Dave Driscoll up in the balcony who breathlessly gives an overview of the scene.

I found these recordings on a pair of home-recording discs about twenty years ago. They had been cut off the air by a fan looking to preserve the moments, and it appears these moments are the only ones that were preserved. But they give a good taste of the mood and the excitement.

The biggest parade in Brooklyn history will honor our pennant-winning Dodgers on Monday, with Borough President John Cashmore proclaiming September 29th "Brooklyn Dodgers Day," and a committee of 30 volunteers today organizing a march that will contain an estimated 60,000 participants -- including, of course, the Dodgers themselves, who will ride in a motorcade from Prospect Park Plaza to Borough Hall as veterans' groups, civic organizations, bands, and anyone else wanting to demonstrate their loyalty to the home team form an escort. The Downtown Brooklyn Association is organizing merchants to provide floats, and is urging all businesses in the borough to declare a half-holiday for Monday in order to allow their employees to attend. The Board of Education has declined a request to close Brooklyn schools for half a day in honor of the Dodgers, but board chairman James Marshall has agreed to "try and do something" to arrange for the attendance at the parade of at least some of the borough's school children.

Already Downtown Brooklyn is taking on a festive air, with an 80-foot banner adorning the front of Loeser's department store, over a window display of baseball memorabilia including a uniform and glove contributed by Leo Durocher himself. Loeser's is distributing thousands of free Dodger victory buttons, to be given out in the Menswear department, the Boys' Clothing department, and the Wrapping Desk on the main floor. At Abraham & Straus, the entire main display window has been given over to photographs of each individual Dodger surmounted by a huge banner reading WELCOME DODGERS. At Namm's, the centerpiece is a large team photo of Brooklyn's last pennant winning team, the 1920 Dodgers, carefully preserved for over two decades by a store employee. The Downtown Business Association promises that by Monday the entire Fulton Street shopping district will be fully decorated with a Dodger theme.

German sources reported today that a total of 70 Russian divisions numbering 1,050,000 men have been "destroyed" in an unprecedented encirclement battle which, according to the Nazi high command, has ended east of Kiev with the capture of 665,000 prisoners. "Not even small parts of the encircled armies of Marshal Semyon Budenny were able to escape the trap," asserted the German report. The German statement contradicts a report from London that Soviet forces had "performed a miracle" by withdrawing "considerable troops" and forming new lines before the Donets basin.

New Soviet successes along the Leningrad front are claimed today in a communique from Moscow, with reports that German military drives have been halted in three major battle areas. Thrusts against Moscow and the Crimea are also reported stalled.

The Soviet Ambassador to Great Britain warned today that a Nazi victory will result in the entire world becoming "one huge prison." Speaking today at the International Conference on Science and World Order in London, Ambassador Ivan Maisky warned that under Nazi rule "there will be no democracy, no culture, no science, and no planning thruout the world. There will be one huge prison thruout the planet in which all nations will be herded together as slaves under the whip of the most brutal and most unscrupulous gang of all time."

Indicating that the long-awaited "break" is near in his ongoing investigation of police corruption in Brooklyn, Assistant Attorney General John H. Amen stated that the break in question "will definitely not be an arrest." Mr. Amen's statement came today as it was learned that several intimates of slain Brownsville policy king Abe Bebchick have "disappeared" before they could be brought in for questioning in connection with allegations that Bebchick paid $3000 in protection money to Brooklyn police in order to secure his gambling operations. It was assumed by the Amen Office that these "disappearances" were orchestrated by higher-ups attempting to block every effort to expose their connection to the "lush policy racket." A series of battles with Serbian guerillas in which Nazi Stuka dive-bombers wiped out the Yugoslav town of Uzice was reported today in press dispatches from Budapest, after 2000 German troops were sent into Serbia to quell political uprisings against local pro-Nazi authorities. At least 360 persons are reported dead in clashes between Nazi enforcers and local guerillas. It was also reported that twenty Serbian Communist hostages were executed by Nazi authorities in reprisal for acts of sabotage against the regime.

A state of emergency has been declared in Czechoslovakia, according to reports monitored in London. The declaration followed the appointment of Reinhardt Heidrich, former chief of police in Berlin, as the new head of the protectorate government, replacing Baron Constantin von Neurath.

German reports stated last night that the Nazi "war juggernaut" continues to rock across the flat Ukraine in an attempt to "deal a death blow" to the battered forces of Soviet Marshal Semyon Budenny, now attempting a back-to-the-wall defense of Kharkov and the huge industrial region of Donets. German reports claim Budenny's armies have already lost up to 1,300,000 men in the Kiev "battle of encirclement." Meanwhile, the Stockholm newspaper Allehanda reported from Helsinki that Finnish forces have occupied the important Russian port of Kandalaksha, cutting the railroad supply line to Murmansk.

In Rome tonight, a Fascist Party decree placed Italy under stern new wartime restrictions, including rigorous new rationing and fiscal controls. The new regulations emerged from a meeting of the Council of Ministers personally presided over by Premier Mussolini, in which measures were taken to give the ruling party even greater control over the nation's political and economic life. All candidates for public office from here onward must be approved by the Party, and Fascist officials will now be reckoned on the same level as the police and military. Under the new food rationing decrees, bread will be for the first time subject to ration.

The Dodgers lost against Philadelphia 7-3 yesterday at Ebbets Field, but the fans didn't mind it a bit. Skipper Leo Durocher was more concerned with saving his front-line players for the World Series than with winning a meaningless game, although each of the regulars made an appearance in the early innings before being replaced -- with the exception of Pete Reiser, who was held out of the game after pulling a ligament during pre-game fielding practice. Reiser was immediately sent for x-rays, and Dr. Frank Glenn of New York Hospital, after examining the hard-hitting youngster, declared "nothing wrong." The entire Dodger team will be present for tomorrow's gala Brooklyn Dodger Day parade. The players will ride along Flatbush Avenue and Fulton Street and will then take their places on the reviewing stand at Borough Hall to inspect an estimated 60,000 marchers who have signed up to participate. All local veterans and civic groups have signed up to march, along with thousands of ordinary fans.

A campaign to declare Brooklyn the "Borough of Attractive Smiles" begins tomorrow afternoon at the Bossert Hotel, under the auspices of the 2nd District Dental Society. "Brooklyn Dental Health Day" will be observed from 2 PM to 11 PM with exhibits, lectures, educational motion pictures, and demonstrations of various aspects of dentistry . Borough President John Cashmore and District Attorney William O'Dwyer are scheduled to appear.

"Old Timer From Brooklyn," who now lives in West Hempstead, congratulates the Dodgers on their success this season, and calls for the construction of "a new Dodger Stadium" at the Parade Grounds near Prospect Park, similar to Soldier Field in Chicago, where "it will always stand as a symbol to sports-loving and faithful Brooklynites."

Joe Louis seemed more interested in doping the World Series and Lou Nova expounded at length on the theories and practices of Yoga as the Champ and his latest challenger made final preparations for tomorrow night's heavyweight title bout at the Polo Grounds. The Brown Bomber will enter the ring at an even 200 pounds, with Nova weighing in at 202. About 65,000 fans are expected to pack the Harlem ball yard tomorrow night, with a $30 top for ringside seats down to $3.50 in the rear of the lower grandstand, and those unable to get in will be able to hear the contest, starting around 10PM, over WOR. The fight will be Louis's seventh title defense of 1941, and his first since he beat Billy Conn on June 18th.

Rosemary Lane is taking a break from Hollywood to open this week in George Abbott's newest stage production "Best Foot Forward." Miss Lane, of the famous Lane Sisters, is no stranger to Terpsichore, and will be right at home in the musical comedy, which opens Tuesday night at the Barrymore Theatre. In addition to her excitement at achieving her long ambition to star in a Broadway show, she's also excited about the prospect of spending a winter in the East. "It had better snow," she says,"or I'll be sorry I came away."
