When people mourned a person's death they wore black and dressed up their clothing to indicate mourning. Like a black armband today. That hat was probably worn at a funeral or dressed to indicate mourning for the death of a public figure.

Anton Pichler Graz "Record", size 57cm probably around WWI. I have been looking for an old Anton Pichler Graz soft felt but haven't had any luck so I decided to jump on this stiff felt with side vents. Anton Pichler was a leading figure in the Austrian hat industry of the late 19th and early 20th Century.

I just think that is marvelous.

I am amazed that the side vents are almost identical to those on my recently acquired ASCO Hats derby.http://www.thefedoralounge.com/index.php?posts/2053757

I wonder if Cohn-Asher imported them from that European source.

Matt, Thanks! Your Cohn-Asher is really fantastic! The overall form is magnificent! You are right the vents are very similar. I will have to look for possible sources! :)

Does anyone know the significance of what looks like "Real Russia" on the sweat? Model name, made there, composed of furs harvested in Russia? etc. ~ interesting marking indeed on a nice hat
