PH. Möckel Hutfabrik, Homburg vor der Höhe, size 55cm, probably 1920s from the Gotisches Haus (Gothic House) Bad Homburg , Germany hat collection,. PH Möckel made the original Homburg hat for Edward VII and they use "Real-Homburg Hat" regardless of the style hat. This Melone is in fantastic condition!

Here is an old excellent quality derby. It was suggested to me that it may date to around the time that HCA was formed, so early thirties (seem about right?). <br /><br />It is in very nice shape, with the only flaws being a bit of wear on the front right of the ribbon and front of the brim binding. Sadly, at 7 1/2 it is a bit too large for my noggin (cue sad violin music). [emoji20] <br />

Definitely 1930s, the label and size tag are consistent with HCA products, and could very well be from 1932 to 1935.

Here is a nifty one...

An ASCO Hats derby.

The American Hatter, Vol. 46, February 1917 lists ASCO as a special brand of Cohn-Asher Hat Company of Los Angeles.

I'll post pics of the hat in here and later post info about the company and what little I have gleaned about its history.

The venting on this is fantastic and it looks as though someone might have wandered out of a store with this brand new on his head a few weeks ago.

Here is what I have read about the Cohn-Asher Hat Company of Los Angeles.

The principals were Arthur Asher and Isidor Cohn.

Isidor was born in Germany in 1869. He emigrated to the US and ended up in California, where he was one of the early LA area Jewish community.

On January 4, 1904, he married Mina Norton, one of the earliest professional teachers in the area. http://www.jmaw.org/mina-norton-early-professional-teacher-of-los-angeles/ At the time of the marriage, Isidor was a traveling clothing salesman.

I am not certain about when Cohn-Asher formed, but it appears to have dissolved no later than 1923. It is mentioned in a publication from that year that it was succeeded by Cohn-Lazerus Hat Company.

The special brands list is from the American Hatter, Vol. 46, February 1917.

The article about cowboy hats and trade show write up appeared in the American Hatter, Vol. 51, August 1921.

The help wanted ad is from the LA Herald, October 26, 1916.

Hutfabrik J. A. Seidl München probably early 1900s. This Melone is made of Wool which was common for pre WWII German and Austrian Stiff Felt hats. Top price point Pre WWII German and Austrian Wool Stiff and Soft Felt hats were of a high quality. The quality of this hat is excellent and it's in super condition (sweatband size tag still present). I was excited to find this Melone because Hutfabrik J. A. Seidl München was strongly linked to Mayser Ulm.

From "Mayser's Hutfabrik Ulm a. Donau" (1925)

"A significant expansion of the commercial foundations of Mayser Ulm arose when in 1921 the G.M.B.H. shares
the hat factory J. A. seidl, Munich went over and its owner, Mr. Seidl who had already 1908 taken at the factory Mayser interest was entrusted now with the dispositional overall management of the factory,
whereby the meritorious participation of Mr Seidl the Mayser Works Ulm was saved. "
