Last one of this weeks haul. Not the least of them too. Borsalino Export Qualität homburg in brown, size 58.The colour is called Dattero on the label. Bound brim at 6 cm and crown at 11 cm in front. Lined with what used to be onionskin covering of the crown patch (only parts of that remain alas, because that stuff is really fragile). Liner states Qualitá Superiore. Sold by Specialhaus Globus. Mid fifties to early sixties. Great looking hat and if the last parts of the onionskin covering are removed a nice and clean liner remains.

Stefan, I just saw this collection and I am both awestruck and totally jealous. I've never seen even one Borsalino in a thrift store.
Well done, and I'm glad you got at least a couple that fit.

Super Borsalino, Stefan. I haven't seen that liner logo before. Glad it's going to a good home.

I really like that contrast
Steve, Karl and Bob, thanks. It is certainly different. The other Qualitá Suprema Borsalinos I have are all lightweight hats. This is no heavy hat to be sure, but not a featherweight either. Liner was a first for me too.

I concur with Bob! +1 for sure.

Mike, Richard, thanks. It's not everyday I find that many good hats in a thrift store. I went to the thrift stores in Amsterdam that belong to the same franchise this week to make sure there had not been a massive delivery of Borsalinos that maybe was divided amongst the stores. That was not the case.

It would be thrift store heaven to me, all I find is baseball caps here in Hicksville.

Borsalino Extra Extra Qualità Superiore. Size 6 1/2 or 7 1/2 in US
nffc6w.jpg

Color Rutenio, ribbon is Asfalto
24fjy1x.jpg

The plus is in the limited weight of a soft, lightweight felt
They are 92 grams lightweight despite the lining and sweatband.
21exapf.jpg

The brim are 5.5 cm. and the creased crown is 11 centimeters
29z7jp0.jpg

It was sold in downtown Milan, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele probably in the late 1950s
2vua4xg.jpg

It seems new or rarely used
o74txi.jpg

The felt has a very peachy and soft finish
fxfinn.jpg

This is a classic Borsalino in color, ribbon and shape

Another in the greys variation
I'm loving this hat. A perfect color and shape.

One more then? This one actually fits me too, so it's a keeper. Borsalino Export Qualität Gran Lusso in brown (mogano - mahogany - according to the label) with a nlack ribbon and bow. Size 56. Overwelt brim at 5,3 cm and crown 10,5 cm at the pinch. Very lightweight hat again and and weighs the same as the black one with only 87 grams. This has a more traditional finishing and has the corrugated spacer in front of the sweatband too. Sold by LH van Hees of München. Lovely hat.

If this hat was in my size I'd be tempted to engage in a bit of theft. What a beautiful hat.

This one haven't posted before. It's waiting for the third hat-exchange with Daniele. Borsalino in grey (Bismuto), Suprema Quality, size 60. Bound brim 5,5cm and crown 11cm at the pinch. A bit unusual to see a colour combination more common to homburg hats on a fedora, but I think it works.

I would not have thought that this combination would have worked, but on seeing it is quite nice.

Sure, I'd be interested in addresses. I think I have been to most places like Episode and the like in Paris, bit I could have missed some. Feel free to message me on here!

This list of shops in the 4th/Marais may be a little out of date, but you can wander to all of them in a couple of hours or less, depending on how much time you spend in each, just make a plan so that you aren’t tacking back over your tracks, but uh, you know that!

Having said this, apart from Episode which you know already, the two that always have me rummaging are a minute apart:

Tilt vintage 8 Rue de Rivoli (a few steps from Place du Bourg-Tibourg). Go in and go downstairs at the back. The basement is all menswear and they have a bunch of hats hanging at the bottom of the stairs.

Corner of Rue du Roi de Sicile and rue Vieille du Temple. They have a lot of hats and I have seen brand new Christie’s, 1960’s Maysers and random others. Tophats, homburgs and bowlers.

Like any place, some are better than others and it is always the question of right place right time.

I have been meaning to add a few Borsalino’s to the Brotherhood archives.

Here is one from 1963 in a dark moss with flecks of blue and grey.
Open: 5-3/4 inches
Centre-creased: 4-1/2 to pinch and 5 to side
Brim: 2 inches
Black ribbon: 2 inches and a wind trolley

The brim edge seems to be similar to that of the Stetson Mode Edge style, or a kind of pressed felt.

There is a number ‘33489’, but the paper was brittle so hard to photograph.

Yesterday I promised you a hat in the "what hat are you waiting for" thread. Here it is. And it is a bit of a special one I must say. This one came with the box as it were, because it was the box I bought and didn't really ask about the hat (thinking it was a women's hat). What I got was more than a nice surprise. Borsalino in black size 58. Raw edge brim at 10cm and (now) open crown at 15cm (!). A Borsalino Western as it were. Even larger in dimensions than the Barbisio Cowboy I have posted before. On the auction pictures and when it arrived the hat had a telescope crown, but for brushing and steaming it I took that out and took the pictures with an open crown. The mark of the old crease can still be seen (I think it was in there for a long long time). The box is original to the hat.
Now to the provenance of the hat (and a bit of speculation). The hat was sold by Henri Beer of Dordrecht (hatter and outfitter). The shop opened in 1931 and moved to address on the box in 1940, so the hat is from after that date. The shop still exists today (selling menswear). Judging by the box and label I would say 1940's therefore. It was sent to Rector vd Heyden of Huize St Jacobs in Dordrecht, a hospital and monastery. At some point however he must have sold it or given it to a mr. C. Bousardt, because I found a small note in between the sweatband that the hat was property of that person. There is a link between the two, because mr Bousardt was in fact Cees Bousardt (1926-2007) of Kerkelijke Kunst Ateliers C. Bousardt (Ecclesiastical Art Gallery), so I'm guessing they knew each other through the church.
So what would a rector of a hospital and monastery do in the forties do with a western hat? My guess is that it may have been ordered as a priests' hat (black, wide brim, low crown) and mr. van der Heyden got (way) more than he bargained for in regards to the crown. It would explain why he lowered the crown with the telescope crease. On the other hand it could be he just loved Tom Mix movies.

Need two posts for this.
