Bulls won by a single point. Missed the game, all of it.:(
I feel your pain, here in Europe we have something called the six nations Rugby tournament. Chances are, you know as much about the game of Rugby as I know about American football, so I won't bore you with an explanation of the six nations.

On Saturday England were playing Wales, I missed it live on TV, I missed it in the evening on the highlights and I missed it on Sunday on the catch up channel. I know that England won, but it as so frustrating not to be able to see, and revel in our moment of glory.

Just for a moment, on a completely different subject, has anyone ever had the experience of trying to say something and all that comes out is a load of gobble-de-gook? Tongue tied doesn't even begin to describe it. It's one of those moments when your brain and tongue absolutely refuse to synchronise. Sometimes I think it's unique to me, so much so that I joke that I probably put my tongue in, back to front this morning, and just for good measure, upside down too. Nom-nom-nom-nom!

Since opera diva Katherine Jenkins is Welsh, my heart leads n' bleeds for Wales.;) ESPN offers good Rugby coverage but the England/Wales match highlights are down.

Tongue-tied malady afflicts with beautiful women-like this morning when a lovely Indian lady approached me for assistance and I was still on my first cup of coffee.

Regularly. But in my case, I believe I know the cause. At an early age I was diagnosed with epilepsy, and anti-seizure medications can cause speech problems in some people. Subsequent medical studies when I was in my early-20s showed zero evidence of such a seizure disorder and I was instructed to stop taking those meds, but by then I had been taking them for well over a decade and the "damage" had been done. With me it usually presents as "stammering"--think Bob Newhart--but there were/are times when I'd simply forget the next word in mid-sentence, and other times when it seemed I was "speaking in tongues" and even I didn't know what I was saying. :D

A smile from the cute girl with the blond pigtails in school used to make me stammer like Bob Newhart or "speak in tongues" nom-nom-nom! :p

There does seem to be a big Katherine Jenkins fan club in the US, maybe it was her appearance on Dancing with the Stars. I saw a few episodes on YouTube, the comments were all sugary about the lilt of her Welsh accent.
So, here for you, and for fans of Katherine Jenkins, is the Welsh National Anthem, sung in Welsh, before a packed stadium, at the start of the Rugby. The clip is only one minute forty-five seconds long, but it does clearly demonstrate all the passion that we feel about the game of Rugby.

The Celtic nations do seem to have a monopoly on cracking anthems. I remember standing in the Scottish, Murrayfield Stadium when the Scots gave voice to their magnificent anthem.

I fell in love with her when she sang Requiem for a Soldier during a BBC broadcast.:D

Just returned from a one week trip to southern California (Orange County) and had the pleasure of returning home via Amtrak on the route- during the good old days- of the Super Chief. While Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal is certainly an art deco jewel, I was disappointed to find not one newsstand - let alone book store- on the premises. I really wanted to have the following encounter with a guy who resembled Frank Nelson:

Me: "Say, Mister.."
Him: "Yeeeeeeees????"
Me: "Do you sell newspapers?"
Him: "Well what do you THINK this is? A trading pit on the New York Stock Exchange??"

Oh... and no announcements of, "Train now leaving on Track Seven for Anaheim... Azusa.... and Cuc .........amonga...," either! Imagine my disappointment.

Amtrak uses NYC's Penn Station and has several newsstands and at least one bookstore (as of a few months ago, the last time I was there, also, oddly, a really good classic pizzeria) and they still announce the trains in that somewhat nasally and echoing train announcer voice "Empire Builder, making stops in Bridgeport, Hartford, South Street Station, Boston and....now boarding track 17 - all aboard!"

Interestingly, Grand Central, the other major NYC station doesn't make any announcements - it's all on the boards and that's that. But Amtrak doesn't go through Grand Central.

The genius of the Benny writing staff is evident in the selection of those specific places. It simply wouldn't have been the same if the train stopped in Inglewood, Pasadena, and El Seg-------undo.

Came away with a mixed opinion of the sketch. Lizzie nailed it on the perfect dialogue of the train announcer, but the acting felt a bit stilted to me and too many of the jokes were telegraphed from miles away. But to be fair, it also is just a different style that takes adjusting too.

I didn't see any guys who looked like Sheldon Leonard who whispered to me , "Hey, Bud. C'mere a minute..," either. You just don't get what you used to with a sleeper ticket, do you? At least the steak and steamed mussels in the dining car were tasty.

Have you ever seen the movie: "Brief Encounter?" We did something similar back in the late sixties, but not at Carnforth Station.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, I thought that Penn Station had been demolished. Is it the original building that's gone, presumably from what you posted, the tracks are still in place?

The actual terminal building/ "head house" is now gone (since 1963): Madison Sq. Garden sits atop the actual station now (East Coasters, correct me if I'm wrong: I was only there twice.). The concourse, ticketing, waiting areas, and track are all below street level.

But Grand Central Terminal still stands, in all of its glory.

ChiTownScion is correct. The old (real, true, beautiful) Penn Station was knocked down in the early '60s and a new "complex" was built over the existing tracks that includes Madison Square Garden and the "new" Penn Station that is a horrible warren of late-'60s architecture (low ceilings, dark corridors, man-made materials).

"Brief Encounter" is an outstanding movie - love it - in a very post-war British way where they simply told good stories in beautiful B&W.
