Yes. This was probably the one. It had a ridiculously low BIN price.
You are right about the hand painting. Most are more high-lighted than painted. Some have full painted images.

I think I see the Eiffel tower woven into the blue background fabric upside down near the tip of the wide side of the tie. Either that or I'm hallucinating.

I recently bought a lot containing a McCall's pattern from 1949.

Note the piece of fabric depicted.

The pattern came along with 21 "quarter block" sections of rayon material. They are the same shape as the piece depicted, and are ready to be made into ties. 2 of them are half finished, already silk tipped by someone long ago. The lot also came with a bunch of lining material.

Some nice patterns in this lot! The ones marked "Original by Merle" - the two sports ones - are particularly interesting. I see quite a few "Original by …" on eBay. They never have store labels. This lot has led me to the conclusion that the ties we find without labels are most likely home-made, rather than the bespoke ties that some people assume they are.

Very, very interesting find. I've found some ties with labels saying they were made by a small tailor in town. This might have been where they got their material from.

I can't find any evidence that McCall produced any of this type of fabric, or any fabric at all. The packet certainly isn't big enough to hold any fabric in addition to the patterns.

But I imagine there was a business producing fabric for just this type of pattern. They wouldn't produce it otherwise. The layout of 4 quarter blocks on a piece of fabric is on the back of the packet, and it is very economical with the fabric, even when cutting on the bias.

I completely agree with this comment. There are crafters today who purchase patterns and retailers who sell material cut specifically for these patterns. There is little reason to think this is a modern convenience.
