I've been collecting vintage ties only for about 2 years, definitely lean towards the bold side:
I just wore this one today, got it recently in a tie grouping.

Grant Stone Diesel Boot Dark Olive Chromexcel - $395 Goodyear welted, Horween Chromexcel, classic good looks. 
Schott 568 Vandals Jacket - $1,250 The classic Perfecto motorcycle jacket, in a very special limited-edition Schott double rider style. 
That's a 50s novelty tie. The sunglasses are removable and just a decorative piece. I owned about 7 of those ties with that exact design in various colors. Call me crazy but I sold every one of 'em. I was watching that particular tie on eBay and it sold at a bargain actually. Those ties were going for $150-$200 over 10 years ago.
