I recently bought a lot containing a McCall's pattern from 1949.

Note the piece of fabric depicted.

The pattern came along with 21 "quarter block" sections of rayon material. They are the same shape as the piece depicted, and are ready to be made into ties. 2 of them are half finished, already silk tipped by someone long ago. The lot also came with a bunch of lining material.

Some nice patterns in this lot! The ones marked "Original by Merle" - the two sports ones - are particularly interesting. I see quite a few "Original by …" on eBay. They never have store labels. This lot has led me to the conclusion that the ties we find without labels are most likely home-made, rather than the bespoke ties that some people assume they are.

The two partially made ones.

Love the patterns. Not one I wouldn't wear.

How are they meant to be constructed?

Nope.

Here's a nice one. Quite rare to find this type of pattern in a British tie. They tended to be rather more sober than the American ones of similar eras. This one is 1940s. I have a couple of other British ties in similarly bold patterns, but not too common.

Very cool, Baron, and it is rare to see such a "bold" British tie. May I ask how much it set you back?
