Hello All , This is a linen suit that is very comfortable to wear .
The inside label states " Barrington" and there is a town close to me with that name so I think it was made local, by say a
department store back in the day before the big box stores took over like J.A.B.

P.S. I had to post a picture of this new coat in my coat stable , I thrift ed this for $14.00 and it fits me like a glove, not
one rip or cigarette burn etc. etc. and very heavy IE :: Warm

Here's an American suit. no labels of any kind, it probably dates to the late 30s-middle 40s (and probably the latter end of that timescale). Awesome fabric with vibrant blue overcheck and red, blue and emerald green flocked stripes.

Here is my American suit with similar style fabric. I like American suits for summer wear but as year around use those are not suitable in here. Last pic shows why Interior liner is bit different that I have seen, fifties?

I would have thought it was a bit earlier than that, tbh. I've seen early suits with fancy liners. There's an ad in a 1932 Apparel Arts for a company that made them, so they were certainly around. I assume there's no Union label in the inner jacket pocket?

Stylewise it is earlier and that is why I bid on it. There is no union label, then it would have been too easy I thought these liners came "to style" in fifties. Good to know, thanks!

I went into a local 'vintage' shop the other day, and found this sb stroller jacket for £18. This shop has very expensive tweed jackets and not-very-vintage, trendy stuff, and this went in the bargain bin. Any ideas on date and origin? My first thought was late '20s German.

Fairly low, very slanted breast pocket.

Two inside pockets with very nice construction. Both are still basted shut.

Undercollar construction.

Seems similar to this jacket I once owned.

Ok, I didn't find other thread where I could ask my question and I didn't really want to make a new thread either. So could this jacket be from 40's or is it newer from 60-70's, maybe even 80's? What I found on the internet was that Rappson was founded in 1960 (http://www.rappson.se/index.html) yet I found this: http://www.shopmani.net/en-US/shop/1252-Tailoring/1947-40's_Rappson_Suit.aspx, a Rappson suit from 40's with the same tag as this jacket has. Has the vintage shop dated the suit horribly wrong? Or is it right but it's from different brand named with the same name of Rappson. Could this jacket really be from 40's? Would it be a good idea to buy it or should I leave it?

I'm hoping for answers soon, I know that this forum is full of experts.

The cut and look of it certainly looks 1940's. Too bad you haven't made a photo of the trouser waist, but if it is as the Rappson suit linked at the shopmani.net site, it would confirm the 1940's STYLE(!).

Now if the Rappson page itself clearly states that the label was founded by Mr Rapp in 1960, there is little to argue over it.
It is also not a different brand, since the logo with the dog is the same (although now modernized).
It is well possible that a conservatively made suit was made in the early 1960's that still resembled earlier times.

But as said, the style and cut itself is perfectly suited for 1940's.
If I had not read that Rappson was founded in 1960 I would have believed a 40's date to be possible.

What might rather be 60's than 40's are the (relatively!) narrower lapels and close button spacing. Most "typical" 40's suits would have a wider button spacing and wider lapels. However this is no sure sign - narrower models existed just as much.

If the price is right, condition good and fits you, go for it.

What does it cost and what size is it?

It's only the jacket so no trousers. So it would have to be used as an odd jacket. It would be my size (36R), the cuffs could need a little shortening. The price was ~15USD, I didn't have any change with me when I saw it so that's why I had to leave it. Thanks for the help!

Too bad that it is only the jacket. But 15 USD is a good price. If it fits you and you have use for it, I would pick it up.
If you want to shorten the sleeves in order to show some shirt cuff, I would not do this. During the late 30's and early 40's in Germany and Scandinavia at least it was fashionable to have longer sleeves that showed nothing of the shirt cuff.

Hm, I guess I could match it up with some trousers. Didn't know about that sleeve thing but I noticed that both of them had buttoned only the middle button.

That was the fashion-wise "desirable" buttoning of three-button jackets, particularly when worn with a vest.
Ideally the lapel shows a beautiful roll.

A dark-blue striped jacket would look best with a pair of solid grey trousers.
What should be avoided are (mis)matches of different pieces of same color and pattern.
In this case blue striped pants that aren't of exactly the same fabric would look like a mismatched suit.
Combinations with solid or different-pattern trousers were however accepted and frequently worn back then.

[EDIT] Rappson certainly existed before 1960. I guess the trademark was first registered in 1960. Or the current company has got its facts wrong. This military coat was made in 1955, and has the similar Rappson label.
