I've been watching ebay since last winter for a pair of brown/white spectators in a style I like (with some nice brogueing and a last that isn't too "rockabilly"). I'd been looking for some oldies from a classic American maker, but I really like the style (and price) of these Magnannis. I've never owned a pair of Magnannis, but they look like they'll be of decent quality.

I have a pair of Nordstrom Premier Italians monk staps...a brand made for Nordstom...that were made by Magnanni. They are a really nice pair of "Italian Pemiers" that are no longer made for Nordstrom. I'm selling them on eBaby. They are not my favorite pair of shoes, but they are well made.

And a pair of Vintage Church's Ranch OxHide Oxford Brogues in a funky color...

I like the color of these, it goes well (my opinion) with blue pants/suit, tan, olive greens, beige. If I had a pair I would wear them without a doubt.

Issh and Cookie...both great shoes! I love the grain on the Church's. Cookie...I think Nettleton's are one of America's great shoes, but I have a hell of a time selling them. It seems no one is familiar with this "Rolls Royce" brand. Do you have the same experience with Nettleton?

There might be something in what you said but if the price today on eBay for 2 NOS Edwin Clapps (in 8C size!) is a sign we need to shut the hell up on this forum FWIW.

$640 is steep, even for some wonderful NOS Clapps. The $300 for the brown ones is fair, if they fit ya!

Note, I'm pretty sure I know the winner of both pairs, so i doubt this will happen again at these prices.

I have a Clapp Imperial Wing...in rare pre-worn condition. I have taken the time to break the shoe in for you. The blisters are mine--all the comfort is yours! Having gone to all that trouble, I'd have to have more than $640. Issh, if you know the winner of those two shoes, the very least he could do is break out the 20 year old Pappy Van Winkle to celebrate with you.

Actually, in the 1930s, it wasn't all that rare on the more expensive models of the better American shoemakers, such as Florsheim, Crosby Square, Nettleton, Nunn-Bush, and more. Too bad that such shoes don't often show up on the market.

Yes Sir! You said it. People rave about the "lickable soles" of top UK and Italian makers now. However, Florsheim, Clapp & countless other makers were doing it just as well (better I think- but I'm biased of course). 80 years ago!

I'm SHOCKED! Marc actually dropped the links to these shoes about a week ago. Stetson Ventilated Specs in excellent condition. I mean, this is as good as it gets for this style! I was shocked that not a SINGLE FL member even bid on 1 single pair. Bigger sizes (like these 10D's) are even harder to find, and the 1 pair is in a rare color combo.

In deference to other FL members, I bid only the absolute minimum on each pair. a bid of $100.01 would have won each and every pair.

For more than a year, I've been looking for the perfect black 'countryside' shoe to wear with my vintage grey tweed suits, dark grey flannels, etc. Not a suede shoe: it doesn't mix well with rain and mud. Not 'gunboat' longwings: can't stand those clunky bricks. Not a blucher shoe: they don't grab me. Not wingtips: too ubiquitous. Not plain-toe or one-piece: too dull. Not split-toe or moccasin: too relaxed. (No wonder my wife can't shop for me!)


What I wanted was a black version of the shoe once worn by British soldiers: classic cap-toe oxfords of stiff, seriously gritty pebble grain cowhide, and with a chunky double leather sole.


Last August, I finally found it. "Swedish label 'Our Legacy' has teamed up with fellow Swedish retailer 'Tres Bien Shop' on this beautiful and exclusive Cap Toe Black Grain shoe. Adhering to the classic oxford shape, the shoe features a grain leather with a storm welted double leather sole for a textured, yet still basic shoe." $425.

There's a much less expensive alternative, BTW. I could go to my local cobbler and have him/her dye a pair of these in black:

I'm much more excited by the vintage finds, frankly. That Florsheim vintage Pebble Grain is TOUGH!!!

Always follow the advice of a Fedora Lounger in the know! Last week, I remembered that I had stashed away a pair of vintage 1950s pebbled grain oxfords in a not-so-nice reddish orange hue. Never wore ‘em because of that color. A quick trip to my local cobbler and … they’re black now!


Cost of shoes on eBay: $5 plus shipping. Cost of dye job: $20. Savings: nearly $400.


(Next step: finding a pair of waxed flat laces in black. Not so easy, that.)
