I almost forgot about my *real* biggest story. A set of china for TWELVE. I was so excited to find it. Nothing special, no fancy name. Just pink and green and dainty. Resembles the Haviland china. The seller went on about how it was her great grandmothers. I, along with another interested bidder wrote and asked how this would be packaged and shipped. She posted our questions on the listing with her answer. She'd be taking it to a pro to have it wrapped up. Shipping cost, $60.

This was just after xmas and I had gotten an ebay gift cert. to use. I won the set for ONLY $50! YEAH! So $110 total for a set of china for 12, not bad! Still worried, I asked the seller for a receipt for the packing.

The boxes were delivered and when I picked them up I could hear the busted china.

This person had NOT went to a pro. Those plastic zip cozies you store china in? That's ALL she had them in. Set right down in the box with a few peanuts on top. Some of the plates had dry-rotted foam in between which of course did no good. She DID wrap the platters with bubble wrap, HOWEVER, she placed the smaller one inside of the big one.. no cushion between, and wrapped them together.
There was fine powder from some of the peices broken so badly. :cry:

As I unwrapped everything I just prayed to have a service for 4. And that's what I got.. barely.
I did get a total refund and the gal actually called me to apologize. I really didn't want to talk to her, I just wanted to tell her how stupid she was! GEESH. Oh, and I got a receipt, from Walmart showing peanuts, packing tape, ect. :eusa_doh:

Oh my goodness. That is a major shame....it is good that you got your money back, but any person, much less an eBay SELLER, would know you can't ship china like that!! That is just lazy, not to mention crass!! There is a reason that I don't sell large sets of china-it would take me a week to properly package it!! Not to mention the cost of the bubble wrap and peanuts. I am glad that you got some service out of it...maybe you could finally learn how to do some mosaic work with the broken pieces? I know-you could find an old table and use the broken pieces to cover the top in a neat pattern, then you could serve a meal with the intact dishes. Hey...that's not a bad idea...I might have to try that myself someday!!
I feel for you, though...it really sucks when things like this happen.

A friend of mine sold his entire huge star wars toy collection for a relatively large sum of money, not having bothered to pack and weigh the package. To properly pack it all he ended up spending more on materials than he made on the sale. D'oh!

Redhot I'm still bummed about it. Just in awe that someone could do such a thing!
I did keep all of the broken stuff, like you said, waiting for some kind of mosaic. I would like to make some jewelry out of some too.

And I expected to have SOME breakage, I was prepared even. But not for THAT.

Leaing towards a dresser, doing the front of the drawers and adding pink crystal knobs. Dunno. It'll be a long time before I get to it anway!

Nikki, I am so saddened by your china horror story! Those poor dishes didn't stand a chance. Glad you were able to salvage something from that disaster.

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I've never purchased a single thing on eBay. I've always had it in my head that it was too risky to make purchases directly to "regular" people whom I don't know. As I'm reading through the thread here, I've come to understand that while a certain amount of caution is a good thing, it doesn't need to interfere with the whole shopping experience. You guys are complete pros when it comes to online shopping, I bow to you all!

So now I'm wanting the low down on using eBay. I've gone so far as to create an account, but that's the extent of my activity. I do have a verified PayPal account so that's another part of the puzzle in place.

I'm curious about eBay etiquette, for example is it ok to watch an item then bid at the last second (lol) or is that considered shady by the seasoned pros? What are other courtesies that I should be aware of? When bidding is it assumed that shipping is included in the winning bid? Or is that always an addition? What other things should I consider? Especially when buying from overseas?

Any other tips and suggestions?

My Suggestion: dont ever start on ebay.....its neverending and you will have much more money if you -stay- the heck away!

I don't think there is ebay etiquette other than paying for your item and leaving true feedback. Everyone watches an item then bids at the last minute. If you didn't, you would run up the price unecessarily. Sometimes the shipping price is included in the purchase but more often, it isn't. The shippin price is usually listed along side the item. If you are very afraid of making a purchase, buy something cheap that way, on the off chance that it doesn't show up, you're not out like 300 bucks. And, look at the seller's feedback, I usually don't buy from anyone with lower than 95 or so percent positive. Good Luck and have fun!
