Wire must be a much easier material to acquire and work with in an industrial application. And as you mention, Josh, wire reed appears not only after but also before this example of a sweatband with natural reed. The Star, which is my oldest Stetson hat, uses some sort of cupric metal, with the off centered gob of goo where the ends meet.
