Post New Hats Here!

[Pellie]

And now for something completely different.
Woolfelt bicorn hat with plume. Not something you see every day. Size 57 and that's about all I can say about it except that it's not the real deal, but a replica. No branding or labels of any kind. A replica of decent quality, but a replica nonetheless. Headshot to follow

Borsalino Debrosan in bismuto courtesy of Stefan. This one arrived a while back but it was a summer Christmas present, so not officially mine until today. The thinnest felt I own. I love this one. The brim stitching is spectacular. It fills a gap in my collection, colour wise and it’s instantly right up there among my favourites.

Any christmas that has presents on the agenda has my vote. Glad it's official now, Gary. Looks good on you.

FINALLY found a wider brim (2 5/8) Stetson ******* in my size. It’s in beautiful condition, looks like a 1960s model with probably a slightly lower crown (5 3/8) than one from the 40s or 50s. Very happy with this one.

I'm pretty new to the forum and I'm amazed how many old hats are still so nice.
Also, it is interesting to see where the old hats were from based on the stamping on the sweat band.

Looks great, David. So much better than those later Play Boy II hats.

The story you are about to read is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent!

This was truly a team effort and I thank fellow Loungers Gary, Stefan, Daniele, and Peter

@The Shoe @steur @Daniele Tanto and @daizawaguy who helped me track down the origins of this Borsalino bowler. The markings were somewhat different than others I had seen. An initial search of the store name yielded results in Japan...rather unusual for Borsalino hats. The markings were very crisp, so I also wondered about this being a more modern hat. Through many exchanges back and forth, Stefan and Daniele were reasonably certain this was a pre-war hat (although exactly how it got from Italy to Japan may always be a mystery).

Peter seems to have summarized our discussions well as he said, "Daimaru is a Department Store in Tokyo. It is likely to be imported or perhaps manufactured with imported parts - likely pre war as post war, everything was damaged and had to be built up again, so your estimate of the date is likely to be correct. That liner, too, is very 30s. Wear in health."

No doubt, I am thrilled to have a Sold in Japan (maybe even a Made in Japan) bowler!

A note back to the seller (in New Jersey) and more clarity has emerged. It seems the hat was owned by an older relative (now many years deceased) of her husband. The relative was a political attache in Japan! The seller is reluctant to give out names, but I am hopeful I can get some additional information from her. I'll keep you posted. Yes, I am ecstatic about this one!

This bowler has typical dimensions. I will call it a mid-weight hat with a very smooth finish. The production tag is not easy to photograph but most of it can be read. There is a large block F on the lower portion and either a model or color listed as Gebel(?)

[Blare]

Borsalino Qualita Superiore - Mid 1950s Medium Brown
4 3/4 crown as shaped
3/8 Thin Ribbon
2 3/4 Brim with 1/8 binding
Wind trolley

It was Sold as an “Adam” hat, presumably because of the Adam Hats box it was stored in and I could not resist grabbing this Borsalino up at a super low Buy It Now deal. As I suspected it fits a bit smaller than it’s tagged 1/8 size and fits almost a perfect 7. The color is a medium to light brown felt in an OR/Strat styling… that I would say favors more of the Stratoliner due to its lighter weight felt. The ribbon and brim binding have faded to a golden tone. Once in hand, I could easily feel where this felt wanted to be guided into this sharp front pinch with gobs of character!

The manufacturing sticker with the four serrated edges would indicate indicates mid 1950’s. I can’t quite make out the the color or style names printed on the tag. Maybe Stefan might have some idea? Coincidentally this Borsalino was originally sold at J.L. Hudson Company of Detroit, the same retail store as the 1940s Dobbs a found a week or so ago.

I have been trying to find a Twenty Five for a reasonable price, and now I can check that box.

I gave it a quick dust-off brushing before quarantine in the deep freeze, but it will need some more work. There are some minor stains, and a LOT of steam will be required to get rid of the cattleman’s crease, but the felt is flawless otherwise, and the sweat is soft and pliable. This may be the one that forces me to try my hand at a naphtha bath.
