The second one of the lot. Both hats were listed as "maybe" size 58. When I asked seller to look behind the sweatband, he couldn't find the labels (I wonder if he looked at all, because they were there).
Wouldn't have helped with this one, because part of the label is lost, but the measurements (20,3cm by 16,7cm) suggest it is indeed a size 58 (I was kind of hoping for a size 59 to be honest, for trade purposes). Anyway.
Echter Mayser Superbe in grey. Bound brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Same antilope, wildleder, suede or whatever finish as the other one and therefore a wonderful hand to the felt. Very similar in style and feel as the Hückel Welheim ones. An oddity on this one is that it has two retailers mentioned: Hut-weber, Frankfurt am Main on the liner and Hut Gundel, Bremerhaven on the sweatband. One of the two may have been a replacement, but it doesn't look like it though and the hat doesn't seem to be worn enough at all to suggest that. Weighs 123 grams.

Before I show the first of the other two hats, this was one of those uh-oh moments when I picked up the package. Two hats were sent to me from Italy. Not every Italian is @Daniele Tanto it seems, because this is what I got handed to me (left).

The resilience of hats and the wonders of steam made resurrection seem easy though. Here's the first one.
Echter Mayser in brown. Size 56 with the bound brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Antilope, wildleder, suede finish; whatever you want to call it. Superb hand to the felt. Mayser at its best. Weighs 117 grams.
Sold by Carl Schweitzer, Dortmund; couldn't find out anything about this retailer.
Liner is still stitched in; the staining on the liner comes from a strip of cellophane between the sweatband and the liner.

Wow.. that one is the most compact I have seen. The resilience though of these old felts is why I no longer worry too too much when a seller doesn’t do a very good job packing appropriately. Doesn’t make it any less amusing or shock worthy. And definitely always a story worth sharing. If it is straw though…..

First episode of the orphanage of Italian hats.
I took it from Stefan who gave me the precise idea about this latest rescue of Italian hats destined for a worse fate, arrived since today in a very good shape, they are New/Old stock
We start the presentation with two hats that look like they were made by the same manufacturer

No label under the sweatband helps us understand, only the liners speak a little.

"Extra Fine" size is 57 centimeters

The shape is that of the Italian hats of the 30s and 40s, the components are those of the period, but the fact that both are preformed makes me doubtful.

This one has a soft heather felt with a ribbon made of woven felt, already seen before

The workmanship is accurate even if the materials are quite average.
These are the measures. the brims measure 6.5cm and the crown, which has stitching on each side, is 10.5cm at its lowest point.



I have included in the description all the photographs of the details to show the style of the graphics and lettering that is that of before the Second World War

I thought that this and the brown one are from the same manufacturer for the shape, components and some construction details. Maybe I was misled by the "La Moda" shop that sold them.

"La Gran Marca - Zeus" size 57 centimeters.

The felt is heavily sprinkled with shellac and keeps the black felt of medium consistency very taut

This too is preformed with the same characteristics as the "Extra Fine".

The measures are as follows; the brims are 6.5cm, the crown at the lowest point is 10.5cm and the ribbon is 2.5cm.
Very well finished, it still has the basting stitches having remained in the warehouse for at least seventy years.



This too has no label under the sweatband and therefore only the lining and details of the interior speaks for it.

The characteristics are those of Italian hats made in the thirties and forties, but its shape made in the hat factory leaves me some doubts.

Off to a flying start with this one and the previous one, Daniele. Very interesting to see the production of Italian hats other than the big names. Hopefully they'll find a good home.

Akubra Stylemaster from The Hattery in Katoomba. Very moldable crown, I am quite surprised to be able to dry bash it easily, and have it hold a shape. I figured with as stiff as it seems it would take distilled water to be able to do much with the crown. The brim does snap but it is somewhat stiff.

Thanks, Joe. You never know how eBay is going to treat you and 7 1/4 is just the start of the sizes that regularly sell for more.

Buying is way more fun than selling on eBay etc.

Third episode of the Italian hat orphanage

This is a brand that you all know: Barbisio Sagliano Micca - Biella.

The hat is a product of the Sixties with a quality that only Barbisio knew how to put in his hats.
"Qualità Extra" Barbisio size 58 full size

The color of the felt is "Dijon" without other indications.

The felt is of the superb Barbisio quality, extremely malleable as well as firm in its shape once formed with a "peachy" touch

The color is a beautiful green (Stefan permitting) as is the finish in the same felt as the ribbon

These are the measurements: the raw brims are at 6.5 centimeters and the crown at its lowest point is at 11 centimeters. Finished with extreme craftsmanship it is no surprise, but a wonderful hat

Fourth episode of the Italian hat orphanage.
Here we have one of the "mysteries" of this find.

The hat has a beautiful felt, "silky" like some French Thibets from the 1930s that I recently found

The indications on who could have produced it are scarce, if not the lining bears clearly visible two "Deers".

We can therefore infer that this is an unbranded and unlabeled "Cappellificio Cervo" product

The hat has been preformed like yesterday's and, personal opinion, is younger than his cronies with the same shape.

I summarize a hat dating back to the 1950s, these are the measurements: the raw brim is 6 cm and the crown at its lowest point is 9.5 cm and the ribbon is 2 cm high.

Finished with good quality, it has its strong point in the black and silky felt

This visible "mistery" hat is one of the examples of the trade war waged by the major Italian producers to take away space for small manufacturers, but the story is long and complex to tell.

Label says "A V" so "Alpha Velour", as Steve indicated
French Point 6 1/2 (fits perfectly), possibly (late) 1920s (?)
brim at 6.3 cm, crown at the dent at impressive 12.5 cm
5.5 cm crown ribbon with a very nice bow treatment
The "ventilation system" at the front is unusual -
I only know this feature from Borsalino hats...
Nice condition except some stains on the lining

This stiff felt is really rather semi-stiff:
Completely dented by shipping ,
but easily recovered thanks to this fact.
It comes with a wind cord & strongly bent up side brim.
The sweat has no print and is quite simple (but still soft);
the black lining with the gold logo is what drew me to it.
As far as the age is concerned, I'm a little unsure:
The shape reminds me a lot of Steve's Habig;
I didn't find this JHS label in his list so far...
Nevertheless, I think: pre WWI - maybe 1900s!?
