Another great old Mallory. This time a soft felt homburg. The brim has a lot more of the D’Orsay curl than my later vintage Homburgs. The felt is a super dark inky blue. I juxtaposed it with my black derby to demonstrate that it is actually blue…it looks the darkest black except in bright direct light.

These sunbodys are sewed up hoods so that leaves me talking smak. And fishing line to boot

Such a relief when hats eventually do show up. WOuld have been a real shame if such a great hat had been lost.

To honor the thread dedicated to the state of health of the market for old or vintage hats, whatever you prefer, I am showing you an interesting find. They were found inside a house, bought complete with furniture and everything a house could hold and put up for sale as a lot. I bought them because from the slightly bizarre photos they showed signs of interest. They are hats, inventories, bought by the owner of the house for unknown reasons. They come from hat shops in small towns or villages in a large rural area south of the city of Mantua. They are hats built between the 1920s and 1960s and reflect the taste of the Italian province. They will be described and photographed individually, but I wanted to share with you what the old vintage hat market offers here in Italy from time to time.
I begin the description by saying "blessed are those who have small sizes"
The hats vary from size 54 (6 3/4) cm. up to a maximum of 58 cm. (7 1/4)

Let's start with three gems size 54 (6 3/4) lucky the wearer. Two Borsalino "misto Volga" type "Celesti" and a "Pomice" directly from the Thirthies.
There is also a black hat, beautiful. now on the head strecther to resume its appearance, same size, marked "Record".
Others are 54-55 cm. (6 7/8) mostly Sixties style with fur felt, not photographed and no 56 (7) size in the lot
Then a good dose of 57 cm. (7 1/8) of various hats producers

From left: La Famigliare velour, Barbisio, Flash, Barbisio, the last is called "Velour" but it is without lining.
What makes the lot interesting is the presence of second-tier Italian hat producers, thus being able to compare hats of high price and construction with those more affordable and suitable for less well-off people, when the hat was an indispensable accessory.
As you can see the tastes in countries only 10 kilometers away varied and these were the hats in Italy on the heads of the peasants also of the landowners

Love these epic hauls, Daniele. Looking forward to seeing them all individually. Proving yourself to be the proprietor of the Italian hat orphanage once again.

Nice find, Marcel. These Borsalino Victoria quality hats don't show up all that often. They date from the seventies I believe.

Mayser "Libelle", 58 cm, possibly later 1950s. The Felt has a great color / finish and easily dry creases. Also a really interesting Bow and Brim treatment. This is my second "Libelle" so not a common Mark.

Unique "Echter Mayser" Celluloid Label attached to the Sweatband. I have never seen one of these before so a very pleasant surprise.

That's a wonderful find, Steve. Bow and brim treatment are great and the celluloid insert is the icing on the cake.

Don't have high hopes for my Buckaroo that's been over three months in shipping from the UK, but other hats did come in this week. First one.
Tirard Ragondia in Marron (that's brown for all the non-French speakers). Size 56 (originally) I think. Raw edge brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Unlined, although it may have had a liner once. The original sweatband was toast and just couldn't be saved, so I replaced it with another French one. Tirard was a manufacturer that had nutria (Rat Gondin - Ragondia) priced higher than beaver. Very nice hat with a smooth hand to the felt. Weighs 101 grams.
The simple bow style makes me think it's fairly early; late forties, early fifties maybe.

Before I show the first of the other two hats, this was one of those uh-oh moments when I picked up the package. Two hats were sent to me from Italy. Not every Italian is @Daniele Tanto it seems, because this is what I got handed to me (left).

The resilience of hats and the wonders of steam made resurrection seem easy though. Here's the first one.
Echter Mayser in brown. Size 56 with the bound brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Antilope, wildleder, suede finish; whatever you want to call it. Superb hand to the felt. Mayser at its best. Weighs 117 grams.
Sold by Carl Schweitzer, Dortmund; couldn't find out anything about this retailer.
Liner is still stitched in; the staining on the liner comes from a strip of cellophane between the sweatband and the liner.

Are you sure about the 70's? Not that i doubt about your knowledge haha, but myself was thinking it is a 90's hat. But i don't know why
