I have to show you the younger brother, in size, of some hats produced by "Cappellificio Cervo" under the name Bantam that I have in my collection.
Cervo Loden M. Cenere 3.jpg

The hat is new and from its appearance it has never been shaped.
Cervo Loden M. Cenere 4.jpg
Super Bantam "Mixed Loden" size 57 or a 7 in the US, but has shrunk over time.
Cervo Loden M. Cenere 1.jpg
The measures are as follows: the brim are at 6 cm. the ribbon at 4.5cm and the open crown is at 12.5cm.
Cervo Loden M. Cenere interno.jpg

The felt is a mixture of fur and wool to achieve the effect you see in the photos.
Cervo Loden M. Cenere etichetta carta.jpg
The paper label tells us that: the color of the felt is "Misto cenere" the felt is "Loden" and the model is 3663.
Cervo Loden M. Cenere 6.jpg

Probably produced in the Sixties for a hat shop in Southern Italy, it is one of the rarities that I would have liked to have in my size. I already have it, don't be greedy
Cervo Loden M. Cenere 2.jpg

This is a wonderful example of the Cappellificio Cervo high craftmanship

what a beautiful felt. It reminds me of the felt on one of my Borsalino “coffin box” hats... except mine has almost no stiffener whatsoever to retain a shape.. almost blanket like.

Penney’s Marathon 7 1/8

50C83DED-B179-4CAC-805F-55BD3AF47D34.jpeg

Penney’s Marathon - Tan felt
4 3/4 crown as shaped - 5 inch open
3/8 grosgrain ribbon
2 1/8 brim - likely trimmed

Well we have reached the very middle of the Mystery Hat Box 9 with hat number 5. A Well worn Penney’s Marathon with all the hallmarks of what appears originally may have been a Stratoliner clone somewhere along the way trimmed to a 2 1/8 stingy brim. The felt is super soft and incredibly shapable. A few small mothing spots on the crown and a small dirty spot on the brim which may clean up. The sweat shows a lot of wear.. but is very soft. I have an old Strat I believe also had the same fate if having its brim trimmed which I like very much. This one though may just be a tad too loose and I might send it on down the line after I get my pandemic hair trimmed.

This is my second Belmonti via eBay so I knew what to expect. First, I have to say that the customer service was wonderful. The seller called me and got my specifics. The only thing I wish was different is the crown height: I like a taller crown. The felt (Tonak/Hückel?) has a Melousine/long hair finish that is very soft. The underlying felt might as well be carbon fiber it’s so hard. Seriously, this could be used as a hard hat, but I knew that based on my first purchase so this was not a surprise. It’s well-made and a nice addition to my rotation.

Brim: 3 1/8” bound
Crown: 5 1/2” open (wish it was higher)
2” wide roan leather sweatband.

The brim isn’t quite as stiff as the crown, but still stiffer than your average western.

I’m tempted to leave this hat open crown as 5 1/2” isn’t enough for me to crease it the way I’d have liked.

The 2020 Enabler of the Year, Stefan @steur was so gracious to send this lovely Penn Craft (Stetson export) back home to America. This is a high end hat, no doubt, and the felt is silky smooth - certainly the best of all the bowlers in my little collection. More pictures next week. For now, I'll just repost a few from Stefan (a much better photographer than I...particularly with black hats). The discussion with the initial post suggested a 1935-1937 date on this one. Thank you, Stefan.

I guess today was a daily double. The fedora was ordered a couple of weeks or so ago from the Hattery and it was discontinued so I thought if I was ever going to get that model then I had better order it. So while I was waiting for that hat I starting hunting for a Kentucky Rancher in the dark fawn, apparently Akubra discountinuing hats triggers a buy response in me. So, nobody tell me if they discontinue any more. Here is the other hat that showed up today from Australian Hat Outlet. I could not find a 59 and so I got lucky to find this 58 which fits but if it shrinks I will have to stretch it back out.

That really is a beauty Randy! I'm up to four black bowlers now and I can't stop looking at others I run across (I assign much of the blame to you for this "problem" of mine ;)). Congrats to you on the Penn Craft and kudos to Stefan for letting it go.

Adam Hats - De Luxe Quality 7 3/8

Adam Hats - De Luxe Quality
Carlyle - Taupe
4 1/2 crown as shaped
2 inch light copper grosgrain ribbon
2 1/8 brim with underwelt

Hat 6 of the Mystery Box 9 reveals one that is definitely a bit too big for me. A 7 3/8 Adam Hats De Luxe Quality. The label indicates either the model or color as Carlyle... it is a light taupe color. The 2 inch grosgrain ribbon is light copper in color. The brim measures 2 1/8 and is finished with a raised underwelt and two rows of stitching that creates a sort of “poor man’s” Cavanagh edge look on the top of the brim. A very cool looking hat.

Views are different, but for me 2 1/8 isn't stingy. It has a lot of character, Joe. Sure is a hat that was well loved.

Three size is more than a bit for most of us, Joe. Pity though, because the hat looks good. I like the colours on it.

While we're on the subject of bowlers. Here's one I acquired this week. Thibet bowler in black. No labels inside the hat, but a size 56 with the brim at 5cm. Made for Baronnier of Nancy, France. Thibet is a brand name made by Ecuyer&Thomas. The details of this hat are wonderful, like the super tight d'Orsay curl. The felt is woolfelt however, so nowhere near the smooth finish of the Penn Craft posted by Randy @Rmccamey above.

How hard can it be? This one was listed as a 57, measured as a 57 ("but would fit a 56 as well") but turned out to be a 55, because the label says so
Anyway. Wegener Seal in brown called "brüssel" on the label. Wildleder or suede finish with the bound brim at 6,3cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. The hand of the felt is fabulous; the German hatmakers had these suede finishes down to an art. Liner is still stitched in, so an earlier hat. Wegeners tend to run a bit large, so this size 55 actually does fit me (all's well...). I'm a bit on the fence about what to do with the torn plastic liner cover.
